I am not saying that they are fighters of the year or the greatest of all time or number one pound for pounders either.

I'm not going to argue with someone who hates Deontay Wilder.

If Wilder KNOCKS OUT FURY AND ORTIZ this year, that's a bigger accomplishment than winning a close fight with Briedis, outpointing Gassiev and stopping Bellew.

ON ANY PLANET it is. (This one included.)

And winning the LINEAL heavyweight title is bigger than UNIFYING the cruiserweight division it always has.

If or when Usyk becomes the LINEAL heavyweight champion, it will be a BIGGER accomplishment than when he unified the cruiserweight division against Gassiev.

That was the case in 1988, when Holyfield unified the cruiserweight title and Mike Tyson beat Michael Spinks for the Lineal title, and Tyson was named Fighter of the Year. And it should be the case this year if Wilder knocks out Fury.

AND ... in answer to your comment ... most of boxing is fighting in the wrong division. Nobody below heavyweight ACTUALLY FIGHTS in their division.

What 160-pound champ weighs between 155 and 160 when he steps in the ring? The answer is NONE of them.

Wilder weighed 214 for his last title defense. I'd say every cruiserweight in the WBSS weighs that on fight night.

All those guys (Usyk, Briedis, Gassiev, Bellew) are heavyweights when they step in the ring. When the Cruiserweight limit was 190, and guys weighed in on fight day, and guys entered the ring at 189, you could make an argument that they weren't.

When they moved up the division limit to 200, and moved the weigh ins back to the day before the matches, you couldn't. All the top cruiserweights are fighting in the heavyweight division when they step in the ring.

And you can run down Luis Ortiz and Tyson Fury until your fingers bleed from typing, but Ortiz and Fury would beat everyone Usyk beat this year.

Usyk accomplished a lot. But if Wilder knocks out Ortiz and Fury, and hands them both their first losses, and becomes the Lineal champ, then Deontay Wilder should be Fighter of the Year.

If Usyk knocked out Ortiz and Fury this year, and Usyk became the Lineal Heavyweight Champion ... he would, HANDS DOWN, be fighter of the Year.

It should be no different for Wilder.

There's more to the case than you're stating here (e.g. Spinks was a much better scalp than Deleon, and throw in a past best Larry Holmes as well).

However, if Wilder has the right kind of win over Fury, he would, IMO, be at least in the conversation.

I can't think of anyone else though.

I don't think anyone else has done enough at this point to take it from Usyk.

But if Wilder knocks out Tyson Fury in a couple weeks, I believe he will have done enough by knocking out both Ortiz and Fury and becoming Lineal Heavyweight Champion.

The linearity would still be disputable. He would have a very decent claim though. And like I said, depending on how that fight unfolded, he might have a case for Fighter of the year.

I would've said crawford will dispute it but i always have a soft spot for guys who come to their opponent's backyard and take their titles. Usyk and no one comes close.

Usyk deserves it. There's no other boxer that comes close.

Agreed. If Wilder beats Fury he's FOTY easily, but it hasn't happened yet.

If he fought Porter instead of Benavidez, it's Crawford since Porter is better than Briedis, Gassiev, and Bellew, but since he fought Benavidez it doesn't cut it.

Yeah that too. What i hate about crawford is he takes fights against contenders or nobody in-between his elite fights while usyk fights legit opposition one after the other.

To be fair to Crawford it's Bob picking those fights for him. Not that easy for him to get those Haymon fights.

Usyk is being overhyped and that's not cool. He is an excellent fighter but he hasn't developed to the level that people are putting him. Back up and let the man grow.

Tbf people are saying he'll beat the likes of joshua, wilder and fury when these guys sizes alone will be huge problems for usyk.

Fair point, but Canelo is fighting again next month. The win over GGG plus capturing a World Title at SMW would give him 2 big victories and would make him a two division champ which is FOTY worthy.
