    baseball, besides boxing.

    Charles "Charlie" Powell

Charlie Powell was the youngest player in the history of the National Football League, just 19 years old when he became a starting defensive end with the San Francisco 49ers in 1952, right out of San Diego High School. Actually, he had signed up with the St. Louis Browns (Pro baseball team) as a power-hitting right fielder and spent the summer after graduation playing Class B ball in Stockton and Idaho before forsaking baseball for pro football. He played five seasons for the 49ers (1952-53 and 1955-57) and two for the Oakland Raiders ( 1960-6 1 ). In between, he pursued a boxing career that included a nationally-televised knockout of No. 2-ranked heavyweight contender Nino Valdes of Cuba.

Testosterone/steroids have been around since the 1940s, and used by some athletes for perhaps that long.

Assessing who qualifies as "ripped" from grainy old black and white photos is both difficult and subjective.

Jim Jeffries looks totally lean and solid in the Johnson fight, at 227.

Steroids have evolved through the years. Their purposes and abilities more segmented and defined. Durgs today are light years ahead of years ago.

Foreman was about 220 for Frazier 1 and pretty ripped. He's the best example to me.

Russell: Why display the worst of this board with a curt, smart ass remark and an open ended statement ?

Why would any boxing afficianado/fan/historian care if a fighter was "ripped" or not. "Ripped" is not necessarily indicative of "in the best possible shape". Im fact, it can be quite the opposite, drained, over-trained, dehydrated.

This thread aims more to the enthusiast of the male form.

I think "ripped" just means carrying low levels of body fat. It's advantageous for a fighter to carry less dead weight (excess baggage : fat), for speed and for stamina.

Cleveland Williams was very toned but it's debatable whether or not he fought in a pre steroid era. That stuff was everywhere by the 80s, and definitely widespread in gyms a decade earlier
