Phillips did spar with Chris Eubank many many times in New York in 1984. They were clubmates.

And both Phillips and Bowe, along with Eubank, Kevin Kelley and Michael Bentt were at the Spanish Golden Gloves finals at a packed Felt Forum in Dec '84. Phillips and Bowe both lost in the final, Phillips at 132 open and Bowe at 178 novice, Kelley won his novice class and Eubank (156) and Bentt were open class winners.

What were they doing in the Spanish GG? And why weren’t they in Spain?

It was the same as the Daily News Golden Gloves but El Diario La Prensa, NY's Spanish language newspaper was the sponsor instead and printed on the vests. Also it wasn't televised on the MSG network like the Daily News GG. Most NYC boxers/trainers/gym owners were Hispanic, especially in The Bronx where there were 20-30 gyms full of 40-50 young Puerto Ricans each.

Ronnie Shields wasn't a champ, though.

The Spanish GG qualifiers were held at Jerome Boxing Club, Adonis Torres was the gym director and Johnny Bos the matchmaker for amateurs turning pro. Chris Eubank worked at the event in '85 selling tickets and handing out vests, guards and thumbless gloves. Nelson Cuevas, Adonis Torres, Luis Camacho, Lenny DeJesus etc organised the tournament. Alex Ramos and Dennis Cruz were frequent winners in the 70s.
