Can you see why Wilder avoided Povetkin after his fight with Ortiz?

Ortiz would smash Povetkin. Povetkin is good, but Ortiz has a better style. Cuban boxers at the high level are generally some of the best in the game. Ortiz by far had the most skill at heavyweight. I think Ortiz probably would have beaten Joshua too.

    No. Not really.

Povetkin only ranks a hair above Ortiz for me. But Povetkin is also slower and less "tricky" than Ortiz.

I think Wilder could handle Povetkin, and I say that despite having Povetkin in my top 5 heavyweights.

Look at how much skill Ortiz displayed in that fight. Yes, I know, he is older and he may have been on PEDs, but in that case, it would have been a fair fight because Povetkin is also old and possibly on PEDs.

I agree that this Olympic level fight would be good, but I think a PED Ortiz would beat a PED Povetkin unless Povetkin catches Ortiz. But Ortiz will be far away with that southpaw style and is real hard to hit clean with a lead hand, and is always baiting the right to counter with his own left which has good power behind it.

Povetkin is a joke. Ortiz would KO him early. That's why he's been ducking him for years.

    Counterpoint:

Donald: Povetkin fought him as his 12th fight. That's a huge step up for a virtual novice
Perez: Took both Takam and Jennings to the wire. The same Jennings that you are excited about Ortiz beating.
Duhaupas: Stamina and not skill is most affected by lack of a camp. JD barely managed to land a shot on Pov.
Hammer: Teper, Price, Johnson are decent wins.
Rudenko: Tough as nails and you have to be a superior boxer to beat him. Which Povetkin is.

    Ortiz' resume :pipiPovetkin's resume

Potvetkin is irrelevant in the scheme of things. He had his shot and he blew it. Nothing can be gained by Wilder knocking his ass out now. I think that beating Miller is a better move.

    Let's recap.

Povetkin / Price is an eliminator for a fight with Joshua.

If Povetkin beats Price he will be facing Joshua. It's far from cut and dried that Joshua is going to be able to beat even this old version of Sasha. Povetkin might still be featuring in Wilder's future. Wilder's mum will have to buy extra washing powder for Wilder's underwear soaks, should that happen.

Not in the least, Ortiz fights NOTHING like Povetkin. Wilder would have a far easier time dealing with Sasha than King Kong, the only reason Wilder struggled mightily was due to Ortiz like Szpilka, being a southpaw. Wilder would tee off on the forehead of Povetkin repeatedly, and stop him with relative ease. Povetkin's chin isn't all that great, Wlad was dropping his ass with glancing jabs, and without his meldonium, as we've all seen recently, his power diminished. Styles make fights, and I've always viewed Povetkin as the easiest win of the "elites" at Heavy for Wilder.

 Heresy! By CST80 too! :(

Povetkin too busy with too much head movement for Wilder's sloppy attack. Moreover, he has the footwork to force the fight up close and conversely, Wilder doesn't have the footwork to create space and keep Pov on the end of his jab. Assuming he had a jab worth talking about.

    Nightmare matchup for Wilder.

Unifications take presidence over mandatories and quite frankly, mandatories don't carry that much weight in todays boxing. They are constantly being skirted for various reasons. Povetkin brings absolutely nothing to the table monetarily and can only be used as a ducking measure. Ortiz was also a mandatory of Joshua's. The only thing that can get in the way of a Joshua vs Wilder fight is a rematch with Parker.

I can see why Povetkin’s team believed his best chance was to pump him full of PEDs.

You are showing an agenda if you seriously think Ortiz would beat Povetkin lol, It's laughable and it's comes from predictable posters who hate Povetkin. Mike Perez at 29 when Povetkin KO'd him in 1 round was better than Ortiz is now.

And yet, they exist and can be enforced. Ask Canelo how his WBC belt is doing ;)

Except for that Povetkin's promoter Andrey Ryabinsky goes to sleep on a money mattress and has never lost a purse bid for Sasha? :)
