Round 1

Oof, well, right off the bat Concepción looks old - and it ain't just the hairline. Cuéllar beating him to the punch easily with a jab that isn't even particularly fast. Concepción's reflexes are looking shot. Cuéllar jolts him with some jabs and combos and the Panamanian can only sloppily graze the body as most of his slow head shots are sidestepped. Cuéllar is caught with a few shots in the final minute but answers back as good as he gets, Concepción rallying but unable to salvage the frame.

Some dude named Leonardo Riaño who does the unofficial scoring for Televisa in Mexico also gave the youngster the 1st on his tarjeta.

 

Round 2

Spirited but slow-handed attacks by Concepción. Cuéllar controlling range for the most part with a steady jab, often doubling up on it and following with a thumping right atop the crown, but Concepción just keeps plowing forward, sometimes belting hooks and looping rights up top but only making partial contact. Cuéllar could be boxing his head off if he just committed to his footwork, but he's pausing to admire his work after landing his 1-1-2s, or perhaps paralyzed by his opponent's reputation as a puncher and shelling up when he sees the bombs flying towards him in ultra slo-mo. Cuéllar caught with a few shots, but again, not enough of a margin to close the gap.

Riaño gave Cuéllar the second round 10-8, but I must have missed something. Didn't see Concepción go down or get docked a point and it wasn't like three minutes of dominant beatdown or anything.

 

Round 3

Concepción is standing in front of his much younger, fresher, bigger, spryer opponent and trading - willing mind but decrepit flesh. It's depressing to see how much speed he's lost since his prime. All his punches seem like he's throwing them underwater. They pause to check a cut on Cuéllar. Time in. Cuéllar lines up Concepción for a long 1-2 stepping back, and, noticing that Concepción took both shots flush he decides to let it ride with a cheeky punt on a lunging left hook, and it clips and drops Concepción. He beats the count with under a minute left and totters as Cuéllar pounds on him, courageously firing back.

Now that was a 10-8.

They fixed the onscreen graphic ahead of the 4th round. Riaño's scorecard now shows a 10-9 in each of the first two rounds, and then a 10-8 for R3. Maybe he was just prescient by a few minutes

 

4th is more of the same, but getting a bit unhinged and ugly. LMCM warned for billygoating and DFCC for rabbit-punching late in the round.

40-35 Cuéllar

 

It has been exactly one year plus a week since his fourth fight with eternal rival Hernán "Tyson" Márquez Beltrán and El Nica would seem to have had the last of his ability tarred out of him in that close decision loss.

He's hanging on by a thread here, forcing a brawl and occasionally giving Cuéllar a scare with power shots getting through by sheer force of will, but they have close to zero percent of the zip and explosiveness he once had.

Cuéllar knocks his gum shield out at one point, lengthy delay placing it back in.

50-44 Cuéllar

 

Riaño actually gave Concepción the 5th and has it 49-45 to Cuéllar.

Meh, he was the busier man (and remains so in the sixth)...there's just very little quality or snap to his work.

 

Concepción walking into jab after jab like a zombie, and Cuéllar showing a little panick when he doesn't go away. Concepción whipping up shots, headhunting, tan lento. Cuéllar catches him with body shots and uppercuts on the chin, doing damage and scoring points but not deterring the little Panamanian madman from applying his largely ineffective pressure.

60-53 Cuéllar.

 

Concepción stepping in underneath the much taller man's (if he's 5'2", El General must be halfway to six foot) jab and attempting to draw him into a brawl. He gets what he wants midway into the round as things explode, but blow up in his face as Cuéllar sends him reeling side to side with hooks. Concepción has a point docked for a foul, didn't see what kind. Cuéllar batters him until the bell.

70-61 Cuéllar
