Saw Teddy Atlas on pro box tv saying that Canelo isn't as great as Mexican greats such as Julio Cesar Chavez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Ricardo Lopez, and Salvador Sanchez. For me it is very close and between Canelo and Chavez for greatest Mexican boxer of all time. I think Canelo has already surpassed the rest of them in historical greatness (Salvador Sanchez didn't do enough imo) If Canelo beats David Benavidez that puts him at the top of the mountain ahead of Chavez pretty clearly. Maybe I'm too young to appreciate the older fighters completely (even though I love the history of the sport) and am being biases towards Canelo since he's in my era (I doubt it) From a resume and accomplishment standpoint is Canelo already the greatest Mexican boxer of all time ?
Ricardo Lopez is overrated i love his boxing style but lets be real how many real top opponents are at Minimumweight ? he didn't move up and really challenge himself enough vs the likes of Gonzalez, Carbajal, etc. The thing is with Canelo he's had alot of things in his favour, he's been awarded alot of close decisions that probably shouldn't of always gone his way. And depending on how you see those fights with the likes of Lara, Golovin 1 and 2, Trout, his ranking could be lower or higher. And let's also remember Canelo has comprehensively been beaten one sidedly by Mayweather in which he was the bigger man, and then beaten by Bivol comprehensively. And just to throw this out there for you Canelo is 18-2 in world title fights, Chavez is 31-2 in world title fights which may alter your opinion.
Chavez got the benefit of the doubt vs Whitaler, Laporte, and the stoppage vs Meldrick Taylor. Chavez lost to Frankie Randall who is way below Bivol or Mayweather. Also got destroyed by De La Hoya twice and he wasnt that old the first time. Canelo even in his debatable losses was very close to ATG middleweight GGG and a very good Lara. I just see Canelo facing and beating much better opposition. The best 2 fighters Chavez fought were Whitaker and De La Hoya and he really went 0-3 against them. Avni Yidlrim is probably better than 90% of the fighters Chavez beat.
He was definitely given the benefit of the doubt vs Randall in the rematch. He wanted it stopped and, somehow was ahead on the cards. A complete joke. Canelo's had a couple of stinkers too but, I think once he's done, he'll generally be regarded as the #1.
The Whitaker fight was at Welterweight which wasn't Chavez's weight and that was after 87 fights, LaPorte wasn't a gift it was a competitive fight which Chavez clearly won without controversy, people have mixed opinions regarding the Taylor fight but whatever you think Taylor was never the same after the damage Chavez did to him. Chavez was past his prime when he lost to Randall and that was after 90 fights, the ODLH fights was when Chavez was even further removed from his prime after over 100 fights and at Welterweight which wasn't his weight. Canelo lost to Bivol in his prime and lost to an older Mayweather when he had youth on his side. Probably right but Chavez beat Rocky Lockridge, Meldrick Taylor x2, Edwin Rosario, Hector Camacho, Roger Mayweather x2, Juan LaPorte, Jose Luis Ramirez, Ruben Castillo, Greg Haugen, Tony Lopez. Well i would say over 90 percent of fans believe Canelo lost to Golovkin the 1st time, that's a bit more than a debatable loss. I would say the 2nd fight is debatable and could've gone either way but again Canelo got the benefit of the doubt as he has in every close fight. Before he become champion yes because Chavez was padding his record, but when he started fighting notable names then no.
Canelo lost to Bivol at LHW which obviously isn't his natural weight. Chavez having 90 fights vs mostly weak opposition doesn't mean that much to me. Canelo has over 60 fights. Yuri Boy Campas also had 100 fights. Chavez didn't do an immediate rematch with Taylor. When he beat Taylor the 2nd time he was way older. I could see arguments for both guys as being the best Mexican boxer of all time but for me it's between those 2.
Salvador Sanchez didn't do enough? LMFAO. Clenelo and Chavez for greatest Mexican boxer of all time? You should slap yourself for evening considering Clenelo as being a great Mexican boxer. If you knew what you were talking about, you would be embarrassed about even mentioning Clenelo in the same sentence with these other greats. If you have any dignity, you should delete your account and return as someone else. BTW, JCC shits on Cleneo's career. End thread.
Yes but Canelo beat Kovalev at Light Heavyweight and has a much bigger frame, Chavez was far too small at Welterweight. Just go through his record and find one notable performance from Chavez at Welterweight. He moved up to Welterweight and fought Whitaker in which he got a gift draw and was unimpressive, and then fought the remainder of his career at Jr Welterweight until he fought ODLH at Welterweight in which at that time he was far removed from his prime. People often say this but it's simply not true his first 43 fights were against mostly nobodies, but he won the Super Featherweight title in his 44th pro fight and from that point on was fighting notable names Chavez had 34 world title fights. Well i don't agree that Canelo is the best Mexican fighter of all time i would say top 5 is reasonable but number 1 ? no not for me.
People who die young have that effect on people & get wildly overrated Salvador was a great Boxer but he died young & people just extrapolate the 7 years he was active for 15 more years to come out & crown him the best Mexican boxer Same with Valero though Sal Sanchez was a far better Boxer, but the way some people talk about Valero running through Pac etc
