Wright isnt a walk punching bag though, he was an elusive fighter, who happened to have an incredible high guard.

If youve noticed the trend with canelo at 168-174 is that hes fighting tall fights that have absolutely no inside game and are basically walking statues . Hes mastered his parrying and head movement because hes knows thats all he needs. Guys like benevidez and plant have alot more dimensions to there game and will give canelo a harder time.

its called boxing. they used to school boxers on how to do these things. nobody can cover their midsection, the front of their head, and the sides of the head all at the same time...the rest is self explanatory. thats why you teach boxers to throw wide hooks to get around tight guards, uppercuts and straight 1-2s to get a split in the guard. an elite fighter sees you protecting something too much, it means youre leaving something open to do that.
canelo is excellent at disguising his hooks. his opponents cant tell if hes coming at the body or top of the head till after they made a choice on what they are blocking. and they often choose wrong. he freezes your offense by making you pay every time you sit on a punch and miss. he has a great awareness of when youre gonna throw heat and hes got the counter ready, all the other throw away punches you throw at him he just slaps away or weaves around.
the guy is fighting at an elite level and his opponents just arent. plus hes in his physical and boxing prime. its gonna take a great fighter to beat him and there arent any real threats on the horizon.

    Good post.

Canelo proves to be a true student of the sport. I see a lot of things other great fighters have done. I can see he took some stuff from Chavez School, Mayweather School, De La Hoya School, Marquez School, and Tyson School. His infighting is great, his defense and shoulder roll is excellent, his De La Hoya like parrying is phenomenal, and his high guard while coming on the inside is Tysonesque.

hes the first fighter ive watched progress throughout his entire career. all others were already amateur standouts or better when i started seeing what they had. i could see his little improvements each fight but didnt really see all his potential. he is reminding me more and more of chavez in the ring. the workmanlike attitude and relentless pressure. but canelo is more subtle, he can pressure you without throwing punches, which tires you out mentally, till you start making mistakes.
i would like to see him against beterbiev, or ward. i think both fights are his to lose and would enhance his legacy.

When he first hit the world scene I wasn't sold on him completely, especially after Jose Cotto rocked him, I thought it would be a matter of time before someone more talented than Cotto would starch him.

Two things made me a fan. His willingness to fight the best which happened early on starting when he was 22 and fighting Trout immediately after Trout upsetted Cotto, and his clear dedication and willingness to improve his boxing.

I used to think he stood very little chance against Ward, but I'd call this a 50/50 fight, because Ward wouldn't be able to fight him like he fights most of his opponents, he would have to be very discipline, and if he tried to get on the inside to maul Canelo, he'd get countered with Canelo's superior speed.

I think he beats Beterbiev. I can't see what Beterbiev could do but hopefully land a hail mary punch. I think they'll make history and unify 168, and then move up and try and clean out 175. I think his MW days are over.

i would keep him away from benavidez. he is too long, fast, hits hard and has young man legs. he could probably beat him, but he wont look great doing it. aside from him, i think canelo will look the beast against anyone under 175.

Literally the only fight that matters at 168. But Benevidez is his own worst enemy. Poor weight management and then of course, the cocaine thing. Clenelo will probably stall this fight for as long as possible as Benevidez is killing himself to make 168 and probably won't be able to do in a year without severely compromising himself.
