“He was the greatest catcher of punches that ever lived (glove blocker). And he could fight all night. He was a combination of Jim Corbett and Louis. I’m glad I didn’t have to fight him

    - Jack Dempsey

Utter nonsense. A main portion of both defenses was clinching and smothering so other fighters couldnt get room to throw their punches. Johnson would grab a guy and push him around the ring for rounds smiling at the crowd until the guy got tired and he finished him off. Same technique Tunney used against Dempsey. Would have been the same result for Johnson.
Jack Dempsey is well documented not to give black champions title shots.
Lol. No they are not. As a percentage of the population it still black fighters and has been since black American fighters have been allowed to box for championships on a regular basis. There are 8 black champions in boxing. And thats not counting the Mayweather or Paul Williams who could hold straps if they wanted to. Conversly there are around 9 MExican champs, and none above lightweight.

So you go from "I'm glad I didn't have to fight him", which could be seen as Dempsey admitting it would be a tough fight, to Dempsey admitting Johnson would have knocked him out? Idiotic.

And the quote is from after Dempsey's career, talking about a hypothetical fight. Dempsey would have absolutely slaughtered Johnson during his reign.

Tunney didn't use anything like the amount of clinching Johnson did. The rules had been altered to stop wrestling. Johnson would not have been allowed to fight like he did in Tunney's era, so don't compare the two when you're obviously wrong. Please watch the fights.

It's funny how you want to talk about statistics, yet when you were saying that Britain doesn't produce good fighters and I statistically proved that Britain produces more elite fighters per capita than America, you ignored them. Now you think they're relevant again because...what, it suits you?

You keep posting "lol", mate. You look like a clown.

Actually, the two guys Cotto lost to are the opposite of slick. margarita takes the Mexican tradition to his head and WAY TOO FAR, and emmanuel wishes he could be Mexican.

Jack Johnson would be a journeyman if he fought in the 90s and even today.

Ali and Leonard put on a show, they cared about the crowd. Modern day black fighters don't care about that, that's why the fan base has left them.

It's your opinion those fights were great, you can make any fight look amazing while doing a highlight. Sure they had their moments but they ain't nothing that people are re-watching on a regular basis.

You are concentrating on one fighter, like I said Mayweather is the exception to the norm. As a whole American black fighters have taken the blue print from Roy Jones and run with it, fight as many bums as you can while in a safety first style. It's a hustler mentality that has brought much discontent in the American boxing fan, that's why the ratings have sunk. There is no confidence in a good product brought to you by HBO.

DLH for the most part went for the finish, Tyson went for the finish. Holyfield is missing from that list and also Chavez, two more fighters who had that killer instinct. Leonard could be a killer when he had to, people weren't walking out of his fights in the 10th round.

He didn't go toe to toe with those guys but he was exciting regardless, and when he had to stand and fight he did it. You don't have to go toe to toe every time but you also can't run around like your man Direll did against Froch and Curtis Stevens. That's part of the problem, guys who can put so much more effort but are afraid to get scratched up in there.

He lost then figured boxing would be better. :nut

They fought 5 months later, how was Duran not prime anymore? You mean a third fight? It would have been the same thing, Leonard out boxing him.

It was dramatic, the fans were on their feet after 12 not leaving after the 9th round.

    G
Maybe you shouldn't just concentrate on one fighter?

Kirkland and Paul Williams are exciting, I'll throw in Cloud. Alexander,Ward,Bradley are hot and cold. Dirrell is part of the problem, he's a negative fighter.

    Just like

    Hopkins -Clinching,crying, pathetic
    Berto - Clinch fest
    Mosley -Clinch fest
    Kevin Johnson -Disgrace
Chad Dawson - can fight but isn't willing to risk it

When you fight in that boring uninspiring manor nobody is going to pay to see you.

He was exciting before Forrest cut off his balls, now he's a clinch fest for the most part. He's effective but still can't get any black people to pay to see him fight, there's a reason he comes out with Mexican color trunks and not in a dashiki.

Top Rank is a joke for not co-promoting but Arum knows there really isn't much of an upside in building a young black fighter. The fanbase has left the building, sure there is Alexander and Mayweather who can sell tickets. You can put Ward in there too, but that's 3 guys out of thousands.

Like I said the Black American fighters better get with it, they are looking more and more like divas and hustlers. HBO ain't going to be playing that game much longer.

    Floyd - Afraid of Pac
Dirrell won't fight Ward and vice versa
    Alexander and Bradley haven't signed

    Gotta get with the program.

Looking white has nothing to do with it, Jesus Soto Karras looks white but nobody a **** about him. His red hair gives him more attention and his pretty boy looks but the reason he's become a big draw is because he's an exciting young talent.

    You're an idiot

I'm talking about excitement, who is jealous of having a bunch of fighters who can't sell out their back yard? I'm talking about present time, you should recognize the problem instead of trying to villainize people for stating facts.

They are boring as **** for the most part but they have big fan bases. I guess German's are more patient when it comes to watching boxing, people here in the states want to see Ko's and blood and action.

Why would I despise black people? Some of the most exciting fighters alltime were black, I just wish the black Americans would go back to that instead of going the safety first hustler route.

Leonard and Ali fought in a style that guaranteed them victory. Please show me one situation where Ali brawled with anybody.
The Chavez and Castillo fights werent highlights. The entire Corley fight was action packed. You just dont know **** about boxing or Floyds career. He was what someone like you would term an exciting boxer for most of his young career. He became more safety first as he moved up in weight gaining champions. Again something thats almost exclusive to black American fighters.
Roy Jones Jr fought and easily defeated atleast 2 ATG's, around 5 hall of famers, and was the first middleweight to gain a championship at heavyweight in 100 years. He is a legend. Mexico or white America/Europe wishes they had a fighter as good as Roy Jones Jr was in his prime.
Young fighter with growing pains. See your problem is that you dont watch much boxing so you see highlights of Froch and rumors of Curtis STevens and you think thats how Dirrell usually fights. When he has gone toe to toe and destroyed other fighters in exciting fashion.
Obviously I was referring to the third fight. :patsch And Duran was obviously ill or he wouldnt have quit. Leonard like Hearns and Duran and waiting till Hagler was shot wasnt in the giving rematches business if he won.
    I concentrate on many fighters.
Dirrell has only fought negatively for 1 fight and a half. Against Froch he opened up and hurt him. He beat the breaks off of Victor Oganov and Anthony Hanshaw like they stole something. He fought brilliantly against Arthur Abraham aswell. Again fighters dont have to be exciting every time out, they have to get the job done.

Was an exciting fighter in his younger days. Became cagey to stay in the game.
    Dont like Berto.
Still known as an action packed fighter. Never made money like Mayweather though. Showing your reasoning to be flawed./
Border line heavyweight contender. Means nothing.
He just has no boxing instincts. But probably would have stopped Pascal if not for the headbutts.
So he wasnt exciting against DLH, Vargas, Cotto and Mayorga?
Because black people perfer slick intelligent fighters. The best most successful proven style there is.
Nonsense. Last young black fighter Top Rank promoted. Floyd Mayweather. They just want the easy money in promoting overrated Mexicans.
Name 3 Mexican/white/Puerto Ricans who are doing big numbers in boxing/

    :rofl
Dirrell and Ward have had a disagreement on the venue. Alexander and Bradley are close to signing.

Either one of these 4 beats the **** out of an Alvarez level fighter.

Now please name me all of these profitable non-black fighters.

I didnt spend that much time looking for the quote. It was you who said Dempsey wasnt afraid of Jack Johnson. I believe he said something similar about other black champions.
Tunney clinched after every exchange. YOu obviously havent see the fight.

Sorry they dont. Name the elite fighters Britain has produced over the last 20 years. Calzaghe, Lewis? Maybe Benn and Eubanks? Then name the elite Americans. Its not even close.

As I always say Michigan produces more great fighters over the last 100 years then Britain.

    lol

I'm not going to answer every little thing since a lot of it is irrelevant to the conversation.

He stayed in there with Shavers when it obviously wasn't in his best interest. Yes he was old but he still didn't have to absorb all that punishment, looked like he wanted to show Shavers didn't hit that hard but was buzzed plenty of times.

None of those fights are must see tv, they are ok like I said before. Of course you masturbate to them since black Americans have become so boring you have to overrate any semi exciting fight.

When was the last time a black American was in FOTY?

If you look back before 1990 almost every FOTY had a black American in there, now like I said they are looking to hustle and not take any punishment.

Roy Jones is probably the most athletically gifted fighter ever, that doesn't erase the fact he fought a ton of bums on HBO while not wanting to fight a rematch with Hopkins or fight Dariusz Michalczewski or Jirov when those were the fights everyone wanted to see.

Like I said he wrote the blue print for black Americans on fighting safety first and hustling HBO or Showtime out of as many bums as possible.

Unfortunately I had to see both those fights, like I said Dirrell is part of the problem. He also faked it when Abraham barely grazed him, typical black American hustle.
He did fight great against Abraham for many rounds, against Froch he was a scared literally running to get away from Froch. Plus he started running against Abraham late before finally finding an easier way out, going into convulsions from a punch that barely grazed him. WHAT A JOKE.

He didn't become cagey, he became a joke. He's clown shoes now, I think that's part of the problem. black Americans used to be the toughest men on earth, they proved it time after time in the ring. Now they have gone soft, the hustle mentality has made black Americans lose their pride. That's why Hopkins rolls around on the floor crying about getting hit behind the head and Toney trolls himself into getting tapped out against an 80 year old white man.

    He's still a black American.

Shane is the best brides maid in boxing but if he doesn't have that A side he can't draw flies to ****.

Best black American Heavyweight doesn't mean much anymore I know.

black American that can fight but doesn't have the balls to get in there, typical.

DLH first fight was great but that was before Forrest cut off his balls. Second fight was a huge MEH, Vargas fights were ok nothing special, nice KO in the second one. Cotto fight was good but Mosley clinched about 300 times, rematch the fight. Mayorga fight was dog **** until Mosley put him away, it was frustrating just watching it.

Because black people perfer slick intelligent fighters. The best most successful proven style there is.

Naw it's just that Shane came along at the wrong time, the black fans had already jumped ship.

Arum might be a lot of things but he ain't dumb, he knows there ain't much upside. Seeing Anthony Peterson look for the easy way out while getting his **** pushed in ain't going to change his mind. Black fighters are going to have to settle for Dan Goosen and Shaw who are nothing but boxing brokers, there's a reason Cunningham is going to Europe to fight. He ain't getting no support from the brothers even in Philly.

Morales is washed up but had 54k people at his last fight in Mexico city.

Marquez always has good million dollar gates.

Saul Alvarez is one of the biggest athletes in Mexico and is already becoming a big draw in the west coast.

Rafael Marquez and Juanma Lopez are fighting at the MGM grand arena.

Miguel Cotto always does great numbers in NY.

White American you mean or any white? White American only has Pavlik but there are plenty of Euro draws. From the Klits to Froch to Sturm, they do very big business in Europe. Even in the US Adamek does damn good in Jersey.

What point are u looking for here?

They call him a coward all the time on ESPN, it's pretty sad but true.

Just make the fight and quit looking like ***** made divas.

    How old are those guys?

Look above, there are too many to name. The only ones that seem to be lacking on the fan base are black Americans, they have become box office poison. The most important thing though is that black Americans lost the white fans, if you look at all the great black Americans there were plenty of white faces in the crowd. Now you don't see it anymore, maybe the UFC took those fans but I think fighting in a negative safety first style is the real culprit.

Negative safety first style best describes Joe Calzhage:deal

That quote doesn't prove anything about Dempsey being afraid, for ****s sake. No way could you interpret that quote as Dempsey being scared.

The most you can realistically take from it, is that Dempsey acknowledged that Johnson was great and he would be tough. No way did he admit he would have been knocked out, nor did he admit he'd lose, nor did he say he was afraid.

Dempsey always had a good word for Wills and Langford.
Haven't seen 'the' fight? What fight are we talking about?
You don't have a clue. Johnson and Tunney were not similar. Unless you want to admit Ricky Hatton is like Pernell Whitaker because they both threw left hands?
I statistically proved you wrong. Britain produces more champions than America - Fact.
