Canelo Alvarez is overrated

He aged out Golovkin and still lost the first fight, but he won the second one, I think. He cleaned up 168 and has faced Golovkin, Bivol, and Mayweather. Can't knock his competition, especially the way people knock Crawford's resume. Canelo's level of opposition is far higher.

He ended Saunders career as well, so fair play to him there. The Clenbuterol issue leaves a sour taste, especially given that it happened around the Golovkin 1 fight. It depends on how highly people rate him; if they have him around the top 15/20 Mexican fighters of all time, that's pretty reasonable. Anything else is overrated.

 

Wasn't he involved with seriously hurting an ex champion who should have never been allowed to spar?

As a canelo hater he's not overrated, it pains me but he accomplished more that any other mex and took more risk than any other boxer around him.
people always bring up kahn but ignored Brooks against G or Marquez jumping up to fight Mayweather and Mayweather still missing weight

 

He may be overrated to casuals, but not by people on this forum, if anything, he's a bit underrated.

He has one of the toughest resumes of any fighter in recent memory... Yes he had some softer touches since Bivol, but up to that point, he fought a lot of very good fighters.

 

And all those fights with a big Asterix next to them.

Are you serious? He has the most delusional fan base in history. Many people were saying hed beat usyk right before he fought bivol. People claimed he was not only the best Mexican fighter all time but the greatest fighter all time. He's by far and away the most overrated fighter of my day period. I was born in 1980.

 

I once confronted Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez about this. "Perhaps you would not judge me so harshly if you knew of my desperate youth, wasted-wasted on the streets of Zimballia." he began. "SHH!" I excoriated in a hiss. "Your past does not excuse unethical and immoral behaviour, sir!" I ejaculated, roaring like a lion. "Well, it doesn't matter. It isn't true anyway. My father was quite wealthy, actually. He was a thief." Alvarez demurred, childishly. "You mean you feel 'bad,' not 'badly.' Unless you're bad at feeling, you uneducated scrub!" Alvarez said unto me, hispaniolically. "Ugh! I am just so tired of your crap, Alvarez! You're worse than the Alvarez from HBO's Oz! Anyway, this anecdote is just to buttress what you're saying, Chin. Was he right about 'demurred?' I dunno. At the time, maybe I said it because I thought it's the kind of word that sounds like the sort of thing someone good with words would say when I said it, when I said that thing of which was said. But, either way, I could probably look it up and figure that out tomorrow, but Saul Alvarez will wake up tomorrow and all he can figure out is that he is still a jerk who is bad and wrong. And overrated. I can still learn. He can't.

I don't think he is. People act like being the center of attention means being overrated because more attention=more respect. And I think Canelos hype has been confused for height. Hes expected to do things he shouldn't be expected to do but the only reason those expectations are there are because of how good he is for his size.


Lets compare him to Oscar De La Hoya another center of attention.
5'11 won first title at 130 goes up to 160 where he is 1-1. Struggled against his 9 best opponents above 140 goes 3-6 in those fights. Ends up being declimated at 147 by a 5'5 guy who started at 112.
5'7.5 won first title at 154 goes up to 175 where he is 1-1. Struggled with Floyd, Lara, GGG, Jacobs, Kovalev, Bivol and Crawford went 4-3-1. Is fairly dominant under 175. Ends up barely losing at 168 to a 5'9 guy who started at 135.

With P4P greats you get a feedback loops where guys are expected to lose because of their size if they usually lose to bigger opponents(Roberto Duran) but if they usually win against larger opponents their size doesn't matter. The loser gets credit for the loss because it was expected the winner gets shame for the loss because it was not.

One can point to Canelo being expected to beat Crawford when he shouldn't have been as Canelo being overrated. Because thats what the term means. But this was more about taking Canelo and Crawfords weight classes at face value. The 140/147/154 champ jumping 2 weight classes is supposed to lose to the 154/160/168/175 one. Regardless who they are. And that was a mistake.

 

He is generally regarded as an ATG by media and fans. I think he was a pretty good fighter in his prime but not great. He never walked through any high level fighter, and got soundly beaten by every elite he faced other than old GGG who I think beat him twice anyway.

He has been a brilliantly managed attraction from the very beginning. Sold to the fans as great but never was.

 

Every fan base has crazy fans. When a fighter is at the height of their career, they tend to get overrated by their fans. There are Usyk fans who think Usyk beats every heavyweight in history. There are Crawford fans who think he beats everyone in history. That's just a common thing when fighters have fans and are on top. Maybe that made Canelo overrated in that moment but he's not overrated now. No one is saying this stuff now because he's not on top anymore.
