A ko victory for Canelo. All of Kirkland's physical skills, that jaw would get shattered and it would not even have to be a right cross.
I watched Golovkin knock Ishida through the ropes and out cold in the 3rd round on PPV from Japan. Paul Williams could not hurt Ishida, much less knock him down. Alvarez would murder Kirkland...........
The Lara win was more impressive given that while Lara was in bad shape at times against Angulo, he was not in as dire straits as Kirkland and he won based on his own effort. Kirkland beat Angulo because Angulo pulled a Mike Jones after hurting Kirkland(with effectively the first big shot he landed), went crazy on Kirkland, and punched himself out trying to stop him. It's a credit to Kirkland's heart that he survived to turn the tables, but him winning that fight was more down to the stupidity of his opponent rather than his own accomplishment. Rhodes was in survival mode the whole way against Canelo, Mosley has never been stopped, and neither has Trout. And it's not so much that I think Canelo is some titanic puncher, I think his punching power is pretty good but not earth-shattering. But pretty good is more than enough given the vulnerability Kirkland has shown in the department of punch resistance since coming back. Kirkland's only shot against Alvarez is to try and rush him and bomb him out first, but the problem is that there's a big gap in hand speed and technique between the two, so Kirkland's far more likely to eat a game-changing counter than to land his bombs first.
I love how Angulo getting absolutely demolished against Kirkland is dismissed to him punching himself out He is getting his ass beat by the end of the very first round of the fight but he lost because he just punched himself out. In the first round. Kirkland had nothing to do with it. ffs lol.
As for the fight.... its hard to tell. Is Canelo able to get Kirkland out of there in the first 5? Or is there a ref there that will let Kirkland keep getting up when hes put down? If theres a ref that will let Kirkland get back up a few times, I think it turns into a very dangerous fight for Canelo.... This was the fight I wanted to see the most at the time. Would have been fireworks. Edge has to be given to Canelo but its a dangerous fight, regardless.
I never said Kirkland had nothing to do with it. He deserves full credit for the heart he showed, a lot of fighters would have folded up the tent under the same circumstances, much less come back and destroy the guy that hurt him so badly. But it's very clear that Angulo punched himself out trying to get Kirkland out of there, Kirkland took advantage of that, and Angulo never recovered from the effort he put out there. He had nothing on his punches for the rest of the fight after Round 1. And if Kirkland eats bombs from Canelo, he won't be getting up more than twice before it's stopped.
Canelos power is overrated, but still, not sure if James could withstand it. But Kirkland has a way of getting into gear where he starts to take punches better, and starts putting his opponents on the backfoot where they lose some pop on their shots as well. As for the Angulo fight. Kirklands power, toughness, and will, had as much to do with the result as did Angulos supposed one round gas job. Theres no way I think that at some point in the second or third round, that Angulo didn't recover from a first round fatigue. Problem is, when he recovered, Kirkland was in gear, and beating the **** out of him. In fact, one can watch the closing seconds of round 2 again, and see that Angulo had his energy back, and he closed the round with a solid combo. Angulos problem was simply that he couldn't take Kirklands speed and power. The speed had him taking too many punches, and the punches he was taking effected him badly. But to each their own. I just crack up how many people (not necessarily you) chalk up that fight as just Angulo gassed.... when it had as much to do with what Kirkland was doing in there.
well, im not going to reiterate what kirk said but not giving kirkland credit for his power and ko over angulo is wrong, especially about angulo gassing. its almost as bad as when people say that jmm landed a "lucky punch." perhaps you might believe that vivian harris gassed against carlos maussa as well and thats why he lost(steward claimed that vivian was out running the day of the fight because he was too wound up). kirklands vera ko, after seeing brian theoretically beat jcc, ko dzinz and beat mora who had beat a prime vernon, is better than any win that canelo has. if alvarez does not knock down trout in the seventh round austin has a good case for bieng robbed by way of compubox(canelo outlanded by twice as many punches in five of the twelve rounds). http://compuboxonline.com/compubox-stats-alvarez-w-12-trout/ with careful matchmaking i believe canelo has four fights left at 154 before he is regulated to gatekeeper status. and if james kos tapia in december kirkland will not be one of them
what if it is kirkland that lands first as opposed to canelo? http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=62137&cat=boxer there is no doubt who has more power at 154 and if you take away the molina fight where james had two tears in his right shoulder you have a guy with an 87 percent ko ratio. but somehow, someway, the canelo nuthuggers will still believe that canelo punches harder than kirkland even though mosley, albeit with eight ounce gloves as opposed to ten, proclaims that mayweather hits as hard as canelo.
The Canelo/Trout fight could have gone either way and Trout got terrible scorecards. I'm not a Canelo fan. I'm simply stating the obvious. When Kirkland beat Vera(and walked through Joel Julio in his next fight), he was a different fighter and I would have given him a decent shot against Alvarez. For whatever reason, after his forced layoff he hasn't been the same in terms of taking punches. Believe what you will about the Angulo fight, I think it's fairly clear that when you literally see Angulo's punches slowing down before Kirkland has put any real hurt on him, that qualifies as a display of gassing out and was the primary cause of his defeat. But fair enough if you believe otherwise.
They tried to get James to fight Canelito before his shoulder healed.:deal It was a total bi.tch move:yep
kirkland only had minor surgery and had been cleared to resume training when he accepted canelo's offer in late may. the fight itself wasn't until mid september, so he still had plenty of time. but as we all know, he got cold feet and pulled out of the fight literally within 24 hours after it was announced, claiming he feared for his life against ginger while making ridiculous financial demands. shortly after the fallout, he sued his promoter and cut ties with everyone around him, including wolfe, most likely because they all disagreed with his punk antics. that wasn't the first time he rejected a high profile fight either. he had previously turned down a fight with williams. sorry to say it, but kirkland has no chin and no balls.
