I think this would have been an interesting fight had they both fought each other @ MW. Both skilled, aggressive counter punchers with good defense, although they were also flat footed. How would you have seen this fight going?

Man GGG's fan are becoming very p@ctard-ish.

    Two counter punchers.
James Toney in his prime. Easy.
Sounds good on paper. Could be a stinker.

I actually think Canelo's skills, at his best, are better than Toney's. On the other hand he's had exactly one fight where he hasn't gassed at one point. It's 50-50 to me.

Although Canelo is proving to be a good fighter, Toney has forgotten more about boxing than Canelo will ever know.

I watched their highlights back to back and tbh Canelo's timing really surprised me. He seems better on the counter whereas Toney uses more body sway to confuse opponents.

Mind you, Toney's judges at their best are better than Canelo's judges, although Canelo's judges are more consistent, so it could be a wash.

Toney was more consistent and his punch count is higher, while canelo often fights in eye catching spurts

Dave Tiberi would agree with you about the effectiveness of Toney’s judges.

Justifications for Toney’s greater ability as a fighter, compared to Canelo: Jirov and Sam Peter. He took Jirov’s best, lured him into deep waters and drowned him. Despite a huge size difference (natural size), he played the part of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Specialist and expertly diffused a big bomber, without resorting to stink up the joint tactics.

I agree with a lot of that but would counter that Toney looked a lot better at heavier weights (to me) than he did at middle. Canelo looks to be a natural middle.
