I think Toney had serious atg skills, like could be mentioned with anyone, just far to hit and miss...But on form, the man was unbelievably gifted imo. I think too big for Canelo plus a bit more naturally skilled. I think Canelo is in his prime now and a great fighter tbf, but prime GGG leaves it to much a gulf even for bent judges..

James was not flat footed at middleweight, for the most part. Whatever Canelo does, Toney did better. Canelo has a number of questionable decisions that Toney could get jealous of, and he's only 28 years old. I doubt that the best Toney wouldnt embarass Trout, Cotto or Golovkin circa. Canelo I. Floyd and Lara were special circumstances. On the other side, I'm not so sure the best Canelo would have embarassed Tiberi, Reggie Johnson or McCallum. In fact they'd probably be much tougher fights.

Toney - too big (he walked around at 200lbs) and too skilled. Canelo is excellent (which is why it's beyond me why he feels the need to cheat with PEDS, judges etc) but there is nothing he does that Toney wouldn't have an answer for.

    Bump.
After seeing Canelo's latest performance I think James Toney would have soundly beaten Canelo IMO.

Lol, Toney would have embarrassed him.
Canelo still wins a wide UD.

Prime Toney on points, in a good technical action fight. No chess match, Toney had that dog in him and could really push himself at MW when needed. He would've been just a bit too much for Canelo down the stretch.

Toney when in shape was simply better. His defence was impeccable, his body attack and counter punching up there with the best ever and his work rate would also be far to much for Canelo.

Canelo again showed this weekend that he fades late against Toney that weakness would be badly exposed. Toney is a member of the 400 club he would land more punches on opponents than Canelo can throw. No way he can handle the pace Toney sets.

Toney knocked out Michael Nunn who Nunn would have beaten the crap out of Canelo and rather easily.
Toney at his BEST destroys Canelo.
Lets not forget while not a one punch knockout artist Toney did have some pop.
Toney not only beats him up but stops him late .
Everytime Canelo faces someone good its a close bout. Lara bout could have gone either way. Trout was very close. GGG got robbed the first time and you could argue Jacobs deserved a draw Although I had Canelo winning by one point.

    Different levels.

Toney superior in every department only way I see Canelo winning is if JT doesn't train properly and underestimates CA.

2 great counter punchers with good defense and iron chins. Great match up.

Toney should win this clear and comfortable...not wide and dominant, but 116-112 type of decision that is never really in doubt
