What about the Duran that fought Barkley, that would give Canelo all he could handle? Oldschool fighters were a different breed. Let's not get carried away now about him blowing away Hagler. This is not Smith we are talking about here, Hargler had the size, skill, and he actually throws back at you for 15 rounds if needed. It's a different ball game.

I'd pick him over Tito no worries there.

I reckon there's an increasing number of lauded MW greats that Canelo would be favourite to beat, but Greb and Hagler aren't amongst them.

I still have Trinidad over Canelo. Canelo doesn't have the style to beat Trinidad, it'll be an ugly fight that'll take years from Canelo's prime.

Well then what is the evidence? Technology is the biggest driver in sports progress: things like specialized tracks, shoes, balance beams, etc. Where has that come into play in boxing? Glove technology, sure, but to what degree, seeing as previous generations used smaller ones?

Understanding body types is another way in which we have improved athletic endeavors. Instead of believing whomever can compete anywhere, we look for specific features, e.g. short legs and long arms for swimmers. How does that factor into boxing?

Diets have surely been upgraded, as has the science of training. But again modern guys fight less rounds. Is there data to suggest that punch outputs are up over the last 40 years or so?

I'm all for being open-minded here, but boxing is much different than most sports because of its implications (potential knockout), the endurance it takes, and the fact that it is not narrow in scope like most others--sprinting, bobsledding, curling, lifting, etc.

There's NOT ONE win on Tito's resume post 154 that would convince any rational boxing fan that Trinidad could beat Canelo. This one has Canelo by KO reading all over it.

    >_> Trinidad only had 5 fights at MW, 2 of them post retirement, not sure what point you're trying to make. His best weight class was 147 and he peaked at 154 before falling in love with his power.

Canelo is obviously the greater fighter than Trinidad but Trinidad is all wrong for Canelo. I was there and watched both of their primes, what exactly is Canelo going to do to knockout Trinidad, stand in the pocket? It would be career suicide for Canelo to walk down and stand on the pocket vs a lethal puncher like Trinidad, especially when he holds the height and reach advantages. Both fighters start out slow but Trinidad had stamina for days and was just as deadly a body puncher as Canelo and Canelo is known to fade later in the fight, especially at 160. It would be a brutal war, but it would be a war where I see Trinidad as the victor, he was built for these types of fights. The only way to beat him is having the size and reach advantage to take his weapons away like Hopkins, Wright and DLH did.

Beating the likes of Lil G, Mundo Callum Smith does not equate to beating Hagler, Monzon, Dick Tiger or Jake LaMotta.

Having watched some Hagler fights and some Canelo fights, Hagler beats the snot out of Canelo. The fully ambidextrous Hagler would box and move around the flat footed Canelo landing jabs and 2 punch combos and making him fight 3 minutes of every round for about 8 rounds then would walk in and beat a frustrated and exhausted Canelo down, **** on ****. Prime Hagler is the superior physical specimen. Canelo is not superior to Hagler in any way. Maybe...maybe he hits a little harder for which advantage he sacrifices his mobility.

    LOL

Canelo went 24 rounds with GGG at middleweight and handled his power pretty well, do you really think Trinidad would have done much better, especially having that famous weak chin. Wake up. This fight has a Kahn-type KO for Tito written all over it.

I don’t think his victory against Smith moves Camelot any further up the ATG rankings.
At MW Hagler beats him either by UD or late stoppage depending if he fancies standing in front of Hagler all night like Mugabi did.
By the way Smith wouldn’t have lasted 4 rounds with Hagler IMO.

Why doesn't this win move Canelo at least a little bit closer to ATG status? He just beat the guy who was considered the best in the division.

GGG was getting outboxed and touched up by Daniel Jacobs and should of had an L or at least a draw vs that guy with 13 wins. So what point are you trying to make? Canelo handed GGG's power well because he's a master boxer, he sapped most of GGG's power away with accurate body shots and timing, that's why GGG was forced to fight on the back foot and his only meaningful punches were mostly jabs because he couldn't commit to land anything significant, Canelo did the same thing with Kovalev. Both these fighters, although extremely heavy handed, depend on the jab to set up a shot and rarely ever throw to the body which is understandable since they're both students of the European amateur boxing school.

Trinidad fights completely different. The man was built to break his opponent down over the course of 12 rounds. I just don't see how Canelo is going to survive the full 12 rounds fighting the way he does vs a monster like Trinidad who's a stylistic nightmare for him. It'll be a fight that'll take years from Canelo's prime.

Also, what famous weak chin are you talking about? Trindad has only been stopped once in almost 50 fights and that was due to a prolonged beating he took from a much bigger man who was an ATG in his absolute prime. The way Trinidad positioned his feet when he stands on the pocket to unload his hooks causes balance problems when trading with other fights. That's why he got knocked down frequently in his career but always got up to knockout the opponent in exchange.

Did JMM have a famous weak chin due to being knocked down 43432423432 times for his balance issues? Nelo got rocked by Cotto's bro, does he have a famously weak chin as well? :eyebrow2:
