People on here are saying the winner of Canelo/Cotto can vacate after the fight, but everything I'm hearing outside of this forum suggests that circumstance won't be possible. To me, it sounds like the only possible scenarios for Cotto if he wants to avoid fighting Golovkin next are these two...

    a) vacate the belt BEFORE the Canelo/Cotto fight and give it to Golovkin. Then, Canelo/Cotto won't be a title fight.
    b) have Cotto and Canelo sign off on a contractual agreement stating the winner will fight GGG next

Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler, stated at the GGG/Monroe post-fight press conference that they don't want to sit another four months to get the title and be forced to sit back, let Canelo/Cotto happen, and then have the winner vacate the belt. He said what they'll consider is Cotto vacating the belt now so Golovkin can start defending it immediately or Cotto and Canelo sign in contract that the winner will face GGG. Los Angeles Times wrote an article not too long ago, and it seems to echo that scenario.

"World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman said Wednesay in a visit to Los Angeles that he’s involved in negotiations that would call for the winner of a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Miguel Cotto fight in November to meet unbeaten Gennady Golovkin next." Tom Loeffler said, 'Cotto can’t defend his title without an agreement in place to fight Gennady next. We can’t prevent that Cotto-Canelo fight from happening. But the winner has to agree to fight Gennady for the title to be at stake. And my understanding is they want to defend the title against Canelo.'”

So, it seems to me vacancy after the Canelo/Cotto fight is no longer an option because the winner is by contract fighting Golovkin next (if neither vacates before the fight). Of course, you can say, "They can't FORCE the winner to get into the ring with Golovkin." Well, yeah. However, if they had a written agreement in place before the Canelo/Cotto fight ever happened, and then the winner still refuses, then GGG's side can seek damages in court. It appears Golovkin's side is playing this smart. They know the winner will probably try to vacate after the fight, so this is their way in preventing it. Either sign off in a contractual agreement or make Canelo/Cotto a non-title fight and give GGG the belt because I think they're done waiting. Give the belt or sign off.

Whether this will all work out as planned is yet to be seen. Negotiations are on-going as I've last read. Still, some are saying Cotto/Canelo winner will just vacate after the fight, but I don't think that's possible anymore, at least at this moment.

Smart move. There's no way Canelo should get that title shot before GGG.

Cotto will most likely vacate the belt before facing Canelo and avoid facing GGG if he wins. Nobody gives a $hit if the fight is for a belt, we just want to see the damn fight and we know GGG is the best at 160.

Yes, K2 wants the winner contractually obligated to fight GGG, before they will allow Cotto-Canelo to be a WBC title fight. Whether or not the WBC enforces this is a different matter. K2's entire leverage is dependent upon the WBC stripping Cotto if they fail to agree and I'm not sure the WBC would go through with it.

Yeah, that's what Tom Loeffler and the WBC are negotiating. There's no resolution yet, but we'll probably know in the upcoming weeks.

Another scenario is striking a deal with GBP for the DL bout. Take a step-aside fee from Roc, work a deal with GBP where they get DL now, and if they win against DL and Canelo beats Cotto that GGG-Canelo happens spring/summer of 2016.

If Cotto wins and dumps title then oh well, sometimes you just gotta take risks.

Loeffler needs to stick to his guns and drag the WBC to court if needed.
The WBC WANTS that title fight fee and will resort to everything to get it.

They can't force the winner to fight Golovkin. Sure, they can have a preliminary agreement, but I doubt the agreement could contain enough specifics to rise to the level of a contract. Golovkin's best bet is to take the step aside money and hope the winner fights him.

ABuffy, how long have you been following boxing for?

Because you make it seem like these are contracts to sign their souls away. It's a financial contract, no one can force anyone to fight if they don't want to. It's not like Loeffler will put a gun to Cotto/Canelo's head and force them to make the fight.

If neither man wants to fight Gennady, and this is AFTER they have already fought, they can just relinquish the title. It's pretty simple stuff. But you keep mentioning in many threads that the winner is forced to fight Gennady. That's not how boxing works; there's been many champs over the years that relinquish their belts and aren't "strong-armed" into fighting someone they don't want to fight.
