For years, Canelo has made sure to box in the smallest categories possible while cutting a lot of weight. The best example we know of is against Angulo where Canelo is weighed at 155 and boxed at 174. Almost 20 pounds between weigh-in and fight. You might think that his failing cardio in many fights could be the result of that. Contrary to what one would have thought he did not linger in 160 where he could have stayed several years and preferred to climb in 168. We have noticed since that he has managed to be active for 36 minutes without problem and I think this is due to the fact that he is cutting a lot less weight than before. I think against Smith he must have weighed around 176 lbs which is only 8 lbs to cut in super middleweight. It is the same choice as Mayweather and Pacquiao who could have probably boxed in 140 or even 135 between 2009 and 2015. They make the choice to sacrifice a physical advantage against an irreproachable condition. They were even doing it to a greater extent since I think around 2012-2015 Pacquiao was boxing around 149-150 and Mayweather around 153-154.
Floyd never even weighed close to 154 for his fights at that weight, so I seriously doubt he was any bigger than Manny. For most fighters, making weight is a big part of camp. But even against Kovalev, Canelo still ran out of steam at times. But yes, I am definitely certain that it is a lot easier for him at 168 and above. Against Golovkin and Jacobs, Alvarez struggled a lot with his stamina.
During Floyd-Pac fight, IV and saline was found in Mayweathers place, undeclared, despite this being against the rules and had to be declared to Pacs camp (it wasn’t). Nevada initially made a big fuss about it but quickly did a 180 and said it was ok. uSADA issued him a TUE AFTER the fight, not before, lol. The amount of IV and saline found can only be used for 2 things. 1) Floyd was masking the PED drugs in his body. 2) Floyd was extremely dehydrated from the weight cutting and needed IV to rehydrate. Floyd chose excuse no.2. if we’re buying Floyds excuse, then no, Alvarez isn’t cutting like Floyd as Floyd was apparently dying to make weight and must have walked 160+.
