:deal This. Now, come to think of it, Maybe that's what Canelo means when he says he'll meet GGG at 155 for the MW title ? I've got it ! He means that he (Canelo) will come in at 155, and since it's for a 160-lb belt, GGG must come in below 160. So the fight will happen then. Great news !
Exactly from 154 TO 160. ARE YOU THIS DUMB. IF YOU FORCE a fight at 155 you are disregarding the confines of the weight class. That is why it is called a catch weight.
Kovalev is a standout fighter, Golovkin is a guy who's made excuses not to fight standout fighters. Those my friend are facts.
No, I'm saying you can fight below 155 and still be a middleweight. Look at Cotto, he was fighting as a SWW for a MW title.
Yeah you can't, I wonder how it works with catchweights though, could you arrange a 140 catchweight for a 168 title fight, that seems almost too dumb but I wouldn't be surprised in this sport.
The thing is that as far as I'm aware, organizations like WBC don't recognize catchweights so the limit would STILL technically be 160.
The only real requirement for a Title fight is that you do not weigh-in above the weight limit of that division. So for a Middleweight Title Fight, the only real requirement is that you weigh 160 or less at the weigh-in. Catchweights within a division for a Title Fight (like what we have seen in recent years) are done through the contract to give financial incentive for a fighter to weigh-in at a certain weight. Like for Floyd vs Canelo, Canelo was still free to come in at 153 or 154, and the fight would go ahead with the belts on the line however Floyd made the contract such that if Canelo weighed in above 152, Canelo would lose a large portion of his purse, and that $$$ would go to Floyd. Thats all catch weights really are, a contract tactic by one fighter using his leverage in the sport to get another fighter to agree on a catchweight below the division limit...To where if that fighter doesnt weigh-in at that agreed weight, that there would be a money penalty for being over that agreed catchweight. As it relates to Canelo, up to this point, he hasnt done that to another fighter yet, so until he does, Im not going to lump him in there with Floyd and Cotto and other fighters who negotiated catch weights into title fights. What I find amazing about the apparent heat he is getting on Instagram is how similar a situation this is to Floyd Canelo with Canelo basically getting attacked for the possibility that he could do to GGG what Floyd did to him. This trend that is now affecting Canelo is a result of the trend that Floyd created by making the 152 catchweight at Canelo's expense. You have to ask yourself why are people upset at Canelo? For doing what Cotto has done at Middleweight, for doing why Floyd did to him? For doing what Pac-Man did to Cotto? Where was the outrage at those fighters for doing that in the past. Canelo hasnt even made a decision yet, but he is already getting criticized more than all those guys combined who did it to him and other fighters who didnt get this much so-called heat directed at them. I think this heat is just people being excited for Canelo to fight GGG and wanting to see Canelo move up to Middleweight.
That's what I was thinking as well, so could you do what I said previously, it seems extraordinarily silly but it doesn't impose on any rules beset by the boxing organizations does it, it would simply be a contractual agreement between two fighters whilst the bout would "oficially" be sanctioned at the actual limit.
Right, you have to really take a birds eye view at the Jr Middleweight and Middleweight to really understand why this has all happened. Floyd has held the Jr Middleweight Belts for two years without ever having to defend them, so during that time Canelo was unable to get a Title Shot at 154. That is why he fought above 154 because they were non-title bouts. Floyd finally vacated the belts after Cotto Canelo was signed, but now Canelo has won the MW Belt. I personally dont like catchweights I think they are a desperate attempt for one fighter to gain an advantage in the ring, by basically paying the other fighter more money to drain himself. Its poor sportsmanship in my opinion and I know a lot of others agree. I dont want to see Canelo go that route, I think he should fight GGG at the regular 160 limit with no catchweight, no BS. At the same time I believe that Canelo is due a 154-lb title shot since hes been ranked #1 in that division for 2 years and didnt get a title shot. However its worth noting that GGG did say hed go down to 154 to fight Mayweather, and given how other fighters like Cotto and Floyd have done catchweights to gain advantages on fighters, it seems ridiculous to me that Canelo cant have those same advantages vs GGG. The fact that he holds the MW title shouldnt mean anything because Floyd held a Jr MW (154-lb) title and still got a catchweight vs Canelo, who was also a Jr MW 154-lb champ,. Basically its a similar situation to Floyd vs Canelo only at a higher weight. I personally think catch weights are stupid and hurt the sport of boxing because they leave too many what IFs and controversy surrounding big fights. So I dont want to see Canelo go that route of demanding GGG drain himself, but I also think if he does get a catchweight of 157 lets say, he shouldnt be seen as any worse than what Floyd or Cotto did. My view is that he deserves a 154-lb title shot for the vacant belts and should have time before he has to defend his newly won MW Title belt. We all want to see Canelo vs GGG, but Canelo should be able to do what he wants to do. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
If these so called 'players' didn't try to rig the game then I wouldn't have to hate either. Time for the red headed step child to step up.
Floyd started this catch weight mess. And Manny also contributed to the problem! Hopefully boxing recovers now that TBE is gone and the Pinoy brawler is on the way out also. Good riddance to all of you. Oh I forgot about Cotto, him also. Retire man and just go away. You cant even attend post fight press confrences when you lose a fight.
