Canelo evidently wanted to move up to cruiserweight and saw Makabu as a somewhat safe option to try and make history moving up to cruiserweight. Bivol derailed those plans (which might've been a cherry pick gone wrong), and perhaps Canelo wanted to make another pitstop at light heavy first getting used to the weight again before moving up to the big leagues.

Despite the setback, Canelo tried to find a way to sneak up to cruiserweight again, this time with Badou Jack:

    https://www.*******.com/amp/badou-j...ant-fight-180-plus-rehydration-clause--175475

Badou Jack is a good boxer, but let's be honest: he's kind of an easy mark in some ways. He's 39, has had a long rugged career, isn't exactly a speed demon, and while he has decent power he isn't some sort of devastating puncher with many decision wins. Canelo would have distinct advantages in hand speed and defense. Also, the rehydration clause was ridiculous and would've completely drained the much larger man giving Canelo a huge edge.

That would've been a pretty fraudulent win and I'm glad Jack cleared the air. Otherwise, naive fans might've thought Canelo was a real deal legitimate cruiserweight champion.

Where does Roy Jones come into play? I'm sure I'm not the only one who picked up on this, but Canelo is testing the waters, dipping his toes so to speak. This all started back when he fought Kovalev which shocked a lot of people given Canelo started his career at the welter range. To the untrained eye, this was a "brave" Canelo daring to be great facing off against a much bigger, hard hitting light heavyweight but most real fans knew Kovalev was past his prime. That was the first testing of the waters, and I'm 100% certain if Canelo manages to win a cruiserweight belt, he'll attempt heavyweight as well. It isn't even a ludicrous idea, you have the relatively small Usyk who normally doesn't weigh much higher than 220 in the first place. There's also Canelo's buddy, Frank Sanchez, who might agree to a glorified sparring session if Sanchez can manage to grab a belt. Canelo isn't stupid, he won't dare go for undisputed or take on any huge skilled monsters such as Fury, but he is definitely watching the upper divisions like a vulture waiting for a somewhat beatable belt holder to make history a la Jones vs Ruiz. If he can do that, his fans will NEVER shut up about how great he is and he can finally have a way to get the critics off his back (although the hardcore fans will see right through it).

    Just to note:
Canelo Kovalev was a fix. Kovalev never throws pawing pitty pat jabs like that all fight…he throws with mean intentions (extending arms, snappy punches) at guys who are basically cruiserweights (Yarde, Eleider) but he decides to pitty pay a guy who jumped not just one weight class but two, up from 160. A guy who wasn’t even a KO artist at 154 or 160 (apart from KOing much smaller Khan)

Given the above, If anyone claims that Kovalev was scared of that midgets counters all fight I’ve got to question their intelligence

Canelo hits pretty hard even at LHW. That said, it's probably the fast turnaround time from the bruising Yarde fight and the weight tricks Canelo played that really drained the life out of Kovalev. You could see the guy was running on fumes that night.

I didn't say he did, Roy legitimately won his belt fair and square (albeit very strategically). Canelo is out here draining dudes and then pounding his chest saying he moved up and took on a big guy.

Roy Jones fought one heavyweight fight with zero catchweights, short camps for opponents or rehydration clauses.

Canelo has made a career of this... yeah, they're practically twinsies.

Think roy just wanted to test out that weight first, I don't remember any catchweight condition or tactics at all.

You completely missed the point. I never said Roy did a bunch of catchweights. I'm saying Canelo wants to make history winning belts from middle to heavy like Roy, but doing it in a sneaky underhanded way.

Wasn't there a rehydration clause for the Virgil Hill fight?

    Except Virgil Hill.

Stop trying to falsify history. And since Roy pulled that once then who knows what other confidential contracts state.

Jamiro Quai's IPA title is something that Alvarez is getting ready to legitimize, word on the street. We're about to have to include another major title here, my dudes.

Virgil Hill is a nobody, and that fight meant nothing. That wasn’t even a title fight, weighed 2lb’s over when there is a 1lb grace for non title fights. So he was a 1lb over, and hill was half a lb over. Hardly going to make a difference is it? RJJ made less than 175lb continuously throughout his career when fighting at 175lb limit. Your a joker who is trying to demean RJJ
