I don't see the need for Canelo to continue to kill himself to make 155 when he is clearly a Middleweight now and weighs as much or more than other Middleweights do on fight night. He not only seems to want other natural Middleweights to drain themselves down to 155 but he asked small ass Cotto to fight at that weight when he can easily make 154. It's weird, I guess he is insecure about fighting at the full limit of 160 and officially declaring himself a Middleweight. Even small ass Cotto fought Sergio at 159 and Cotto is smaller than Canelo. It seems like an insecurity thing. I believe the insecurity stems from his height. He is generously listed at 5'9 and I think if he was 5'10 or taller he would have already committed to 160 already. The thing that makes him look bad is that natural lightweight Duran was 5'7 and he fought 6'1 Hearns at 154 and 6'1 Barkley at 160 and a prime all time great monster in Hagler (5'9.5) at the full 160. I like Canelo but he really needs to stop this silliness.
His real height is 5'7 1/2" (remember when his listing changed to that? Then for some reason changed back to 5'9") and yes, he is (rightfully) concerned that he will struggle at middleweight being that short. However, that's no excuse. He is a middleweight-sized guy (natural weight in the 170s when in perfect shape) with a big, thick build. He is always going to be a short, stocky fighter and there's nothing wrong with that. He just has to learn to fight the right way to suit his physical limitations and I think he just doesn't want to. I think his problem is that he wants to be a slick boxer/puncher but his build means he probably needs to be more of a come-forward swarmer type. I think there is an element of delusion where his strengths as a fighter don't match his physique and he doesn't want to change that.
I think other than GGG he'd easily beat anybody else at the weight though including the likes of Quillin or Lee.
Probably but he shouldn't be, he's about the same size as Lemieux. If you judge his height against GGG who's 5'11 then he may be telling the truth about being 5'9, GGG is slightly bent. http://lesadeptesdelaboxe.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Canelo-Golovkin-De-La-Hoya-fight.jpg
I'm not sure he doesn't want to move up to 160 because of height, there's plenty of tall people at 154. I just think he likes to have a weight advantage. He has the ability to shrink down to 154-155 and fight comfortably at around 170 on fight night. He won't be able to do this all the time, but for now he's making the most of it. I don't think he made Cotto do anything either. Cotto was getting heavy criticism for his catch weight fights already and trying to make Canelo come in at 154 or lower would've been too much. Canelo just happened to benefit more from making the fight at 155 than Cotto.
Splitting hairs but GGG is listed 5'10 1/2" and boxing heights are 99% inflated with under-listings almost unheard of... How about judging his height against Mayweather...they were basically the same height (I actually thought Alvarez was a fraction taller but some people even reckoned Floyd was a little bit taller) and the 5'8" listing is generous to Floyd. I didn't think that 5'7 1/2" listing was an accident, I think it was just a rare case of a real height being used for once.
He's 5'7 1/2 at best, oscar who is listed at 5'10 (so probably a strong 5'9 in real life barefoot) is always towering over him unless he's wearing his special shoes. I honestly don't know how tall GGG really is. Sometimes he looks under 5'10, other times he looks 5'11+.
Good points. I'm going to keep going back to Duran who was a 5'7 natural lightweight who again took on 6'1 Barkley (at full 160), 5'9.5 Hagler (at full 160) and 6'1 Hearns (at full 154).
Whatever GGG's height is, Canelo weighs more than him on fight night and should be willing to face him for the unified Middleweight title at the full 160 pound limit.
In his mind, when you are 5'8 fighting a 5'11 dude at 154 when you weigh 172+ on fight night and he weighs 160 is better than facing a 5'11 dude at 160 when you both weigh roughly the same. Also, fighting a 5'11 dude at 155 is better than facing a 5'11 dude who didn't have to drain to 155. I guarantee you that if Canelo was 5'11 or taller this weight issue would not exist because he wouldn't be looking to even the playing field.
5ft 7 and 170 would definitely make someone a more stocky fighter... I think the guy who said that Canelo is a bit in denial about his physical build vs his style was right on. He does have a puncher/boxer style, but we all know he has a very low work rate and he feels that he can't up that perhaps... So if he tried to be a swarmer he would fail. Being a lot shorter as a boxer puncher is much harder to pull off and at 160 lbs, you can definitely be fighting guys who are 6ft2...
