Canelo's last fights were against Trout, Mayweather, Angulo, Lara, and Kirkland. Cotto's were against, Mayweather, Trout, Rodriguez, Martinez, and Geale. I don't think experience is going to factor, they both have fought good enough competition through the years. You want to talk about ability to fight against a moving target? Canelo isn't great at cutting a ring, but he did well enough against both Lara and Trout to merit those decisions. With Mayweather chosing to fight Cotto, the only real moving target that Cotto has faced through those five fights was Trout, and Trout beat him handily in a non-competitive fight. In those 5 fights, Canelo faced 3 really tough style matchups with fighters at the top of their game, Trout, Mayweather, and Lara. Cotto's only real A game opposition was Mayweather. Canelo has actually faced and beat better opposition in recent years than Cotto has.
Experience is deeper than the last few fights each man has under their belts. You could be right....experience won't play a role in the outcome, however experience is one of the most overlooked metric when forecasting how a fight will pay out in these kinds of match ups. The Lara fight could have gone either way but I gave the nod to Nelo. Trout was a great performance by the young Mexican boxer but the big difference in opposition over the years were not that disparate. All of the fights that Miguel has won at middleweight were against top guys who held a significant weight advantage over him. Nelo is usually always fighting smaller men who aren't on level with Cotto aside from Mayweather of course. The loss Cotto suffered at the hands of Trout was actually a turning point for Cotto. He needed a change and wouldn't have lost if Cotto came in motivated and not looking past a very game and capable Austin. The loss for Cotto rejuvenated his passion that fell complacent. His resurgence has been fun to witness and infused boxing once again with a renewed Miguel Cotto. How things play out later in the month will be a true measure of where Cotto is at this stage of his career. He can't take Nelo lightly.....but Nelo can't take Cotto lightly either. Should be a fun fight to watch.
My two cents nobody talks about a critical asset "chin" both are heavy punchers who could take a punch better? sure most agreed Canelo for that reason he's the favorite.
I get that feeling that most in this forum think Cotto is the better boxer, but oddly enough Floyd Mayweather who has fought them both thinks Canelo is the better boxer. There's one down your throat to think about!
In actual skill level, Cotto has an edge on the present version of Canelo. But it's not enough to offset the deficit in youth, strength, and power. He'll be lucky to hear the final bell.
On nov. 21, 2015, you will see just how much more pure boxing ability, experience, savvy, and ring generalship Cotto possesses when compared to Ginger.
