There are many people saying Canelo is declining nowadays, that he has seen his best years. I disagree with that for multiple reasons.

    1. People still underestimate John Ryder, he is prime right now at 34, forget about who he has lost before, man gave Callum Smith and Daniel Jacobs all they could handle, he is tough and quite awkward to fight, bet he could beat Benavidez, based on Gavril fight.

    2. Canelo still has reflexes and great defensive movements, one year ago he fought Bivol and probe it, although he lost 9-3 in my card against him he showed good defense at times and threw combinations at Bivol, one thing people are saying lacked at Ryder fight. At the end of the day he wanted to please Mexican fans at his hometown, looking for the KO, that didn't went well because Ryder is stronger than him and has better stamina, Canelo faded in the later rounds as almost always he faces a fighter who can keep the pace for 12 rounds, and as a result he ate big shots from Ryder, but that's nothing to worry about. I think Canelo strategy wasn't the best for winning easy and reducing the damage, but was the best to give Mexican people the fight they wanted, with lower output but big shots, without head movement but toe to toe.

Canelo isn't fading, not yet, although going 36 rounds with GGG isn't good for anyone.

He's obviously on the decline. Nothing to take away from Ryder but I didn't see the accuracy, defense, or speed from Canelo. Very poor performance for his standards.

Bivol and Benavidez both destroy Canelo and I will he shocked if Canelo actually takes the fight against the Mexican Monster.

Yes he is. It's absolutely as clear as day that he is. That doesn't mean he's not still a very good very watchable fighter but he's no longer in his absolute prime. Given that he turned pro at 15, 16, it would be astonishing if he was.

Against GGG 3 and Ryder from about round 8 onward, his output was noticeably diminished and he was getting hit way more.

The Canelo from a few years ago had bona-fide elite defense: fantastic head movement, and great IQ and reflexes to anticipate & evade punches (or at least roll with them).

But the Canelo from the past 3 fights (Bivol onward) has had anything but good defense. His punch power is still there, his chin is fine too, but his reflexes are basically shot and he doesn't have the gas tank to fight effectively for the full 12 rounds anymore.

You are the one blinded, when I criticise Canelo I get a bunch of callow teenagers crying like if I had insulted their mothers, when I tell things I personally feel that doesn't suit the haters, then I get called Canelo fan boy lol. You people see life as black or white don't take time to discover the grey scale and always act as fanatics.

Canelo has looked more vulnerable in his last three fights, so obviously people are right to question whether he has truly regressed. Although to me at least he looked as the same as ever, and people are slightly exaggerating. There are three reasons for this, IMO.

    A) The hyperbolic praise was on overdrive after 2021, and a lot of people were falling over themselves talking about how good he was and how cruiserweights like Makabu (even Usyk) had no chance against him. After his defeat to Bivol, the illusion of Canelo being this Mexican machine has been destroyed for the general public.

    B) Canelo fights too often, which leads to him being over trained for most of his fights. Thrice times in 2021, twice in 2022 and now one fight in 2023 - 58 rounds against almost elite level competition (excluding Yildirim). For example, Floyd after he came back in 2009 was much more sporadic when fighting, mostly once a year until 2013.

    C) Canelo's come forward, high guard style of trying to bully and bulldoze his opponents is a over used schtick as this point. He doesn't use his jab enough, doesn't throw his famous combinations anymore, and has become incredibly predictable at times, especially with the right hand. He has to start a transition and transform his style to a more jab oriented, boxer-puncher style, otherwise he will continue to struggle. Canelo isn't strong enough to push back and bully the likes of Bivol, Beterbiev and Benavidez (the dangerous B-trio).

But everything I said is just my opinion. My worthless two cents. Just consider this a opinion from a stranger online. :chuck:

Canelo is definitely on the back 9. He better avoid The Mexican Monster or Morrell. And I have no doubts that he will. Bivol will beat him again. So it is a difficult dilemma for Canelo. Alas, no more Yildirim type of fighters.

Canelo's prime was between Chavez Jr to Rocky Fielding.

Couldn't agree more with this one, 2021 Canelo was loosing more rounds to Saunders and Plant that he lost to Ryder, he KO'd both because they are not as durable as Ryder, not because he was better fighter in 2021, he almost KO'd Ryder in the fifth, if he did, even the referee could have stopped the fight, people would be talking about how weak of an opponent John Ryder was, instead of Canelo being on the decline. Casuals were shocked at Bivol winning the bout, true boxing fans knew what was going to happen and got a few quids with the absurd odds. Bivol was always bigger and could even say better fighter than Alvarez.
