Yes, DAZN is overpaying for Canelo in that sense. But we don´t know that for certain. They are playing the long game here. And the Jacobs and Kovalev live gates were really good, so you would expect they did good numbers in terms of subscriptions. And no, Alvarez was not paid 35mil for Fielding. Eubank Jr. wouldn’t be massive and nor would DAZN send Canelo to the U.K. So Canelo is fighting twice a year for 35mil a fight. So that is 70mil a year and a little over 5.8mil a month. Meaning Canelo has to attract 600k monthly subscriptions for the year. Now honestly speaking, that doesn´t seem like a lot to break even. And we know Canelo is a big draw on PPV. DAZN is a lot cheaper.
Bingo!!!!!! You nailed it my friend. Their are a lot of people who subscribe to DAZN monthly and on a long term yearly basis strictly so they can view Canelo fights, and even more people than that subscribe to DAZN because they can view both Canelo and other events put forth by them. What I'm saying is there are a lot of DAZN subscribers who want the whole package that DAZN offers but would not subscribe if Canelo wasn't the face of boxing in that channel. DAZN isn't stupid here people, they've done their math and believe me, they're profiting on Canelo.
DAZN is overpaying and losing money on (almost?) every its fighter! But at least Canelo saved them from complete failure initially (because who had they got back then: Jesse Vargas, Tevin Farmer, Maurice Hooker, ...?) Alvarez is a legitimate draw. A ton of Canelo's fans at least tried to sign for DAZN. Some of those stayed but some left because they didn't like the streaming concept and/or were having technical difficulties watching it. For DAZN to sign Golovkin for that ridiculous amount of money was actually a dubious move. How many people really signed to watch Golovkin vs Steve Rolls or even Derevyanchenko? DAZN signed GGG because they expected Canelo to fight him. They only forgot to ask Canelo himself about it. And they can't force a boxer to fight another specific boxer in America (because of the Ali act). DAZN is paying Golovkin 15-20 million for a fight, they payed Derevyanchenko 5 million for a fight, so how is paying Canelo 35 for a fight too much? If Canelo leaves DAZN, he will be just fine. He can sign a deal with ESPN or FOX and with their massive promotion sell PPVs for huge amounts of money. What will DAZN do without Canelo? They will probably switch to Youtubers completely...
All I can say is that they might not have made a profit yet, as Canelo has had only two meaningful fights on the platform, one being on rather shot notice(They had only two months to promote Kovalev and IMO GBP is doing a **** job anyways). But looking at Canelo´s numbers throughout the years, it doesn´t seem like it will take much for DAZN to at least break even. And Matchroom has been stepping up their game as well. Add to that the WBSS. If only GBP could get their **** together and just go all in on DAZN(Went up against UFC 244). **** Facebook. **** everything else. Take the few names they have and just stack some cards! And stop doing so many in-house fights.
They sold tickets to several Mayweather fights up and down the Vegas strip for $30 the morning of the fight. Guess what that indicated? That indicated you would be wrong if you tried to read into it. It's America; we stay in.
Mayweather/Ortiz: 1.2 million PPV buys This next one is totally memory and might be off but I think Guerrero on fight #1 of his Showtime deal was 900+K PPV buys.
I think I've gotten my moneys worth with dazn Aj v Ruiz , G v Chenko,Jacobs v Chenko, Estrada v Rung, G v Canelo
Those are pretty good numbers, better than I would have guessed for the Jacobs and Kov fights. Dazn is a crazy good deal. Not sure they can sustain it but it’s a bargain for fans so far. I hope Canelo’s next opponent isn’t another shot old guy or weight drained big guy. He needs to get back to 160 and unify. Maybe make a stop at 168 on the way down. Gimmick fights are okay but should be the exception. This isn’t a circus act. Or is it?
