Last night's Canelo Alvarez - Jaime Munguia bout was a very enjoyable fight to watch. Munguia often peppered Canelo with combinations while Alvarez pounded Munguia with powerful single shots to the head and body. Throw in Alvarez' 4th round knockdown of his country man and we treated to a good fight all the way around. In the end Alvarez was awarded a unanimous decision by scores of 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.

Our round by round thread was pretty active with numerous diverse and a few dissenting opinions and scores. Here's the breakdown.

    1. 28 people posted their final scores with 24 believing Alvarez won the bout. No one scored the fight a draw.

    2. The average of those 28 scores was 115.14 to 111.77 in favor of Canelo. Essentially, this is seven rounds to five for Munguia with Munguia losing a point because he was knocked down in the fourth round.

    3. Not surprisingly based on the average, the most common score was 115-112 which was the final score for eleven posters, including me.

    4. The widest score favoring Canelo was 118-109. Conversely, a three point advantage of 115-112 was the biggest spread for Munguia.

Not everybody posted scores for every round with some only posting some rounds and some posting only a final score. I used any individual rounds posted to tabulate the following stats.

    1. Munguia was favored by the majority of posters in rounds 1,2,3,9 and 11. There were no rounds where the posted scores were equal for each fighter.

    2. Munguia was a unanimous choice in round 3 while Alvarez was unanimous in round 5 and, of course, round 4 when Canelo used a big uppercut to put Munguia down for the first time in his career.

    3. The closest round was the 8th where Canelo won the round on nine of the 15 posted scorecards.

    4. We had three posters, @PinoyProdigy, @vast and @DoubleG95Fanatic, who posted the same as the majority for all 12 rounds.

    5. The majority of Canelo's advantage came in rounds 5 through 8. Canelo was adjudged the winner of those scored rounds 49 of 59 times.

All in all, it's fair to say that the majority of us felt the fight turned dramatically after Canelo's 4th round knockdown. The actual judges felt the same way. Tim Cheatham, David Sutherland and Steve Weisfeld gave Munguia just four of the combined 24 rounds from the 5th round on.

    1 Munguia
    2 Munguia
    3 Munguia
    4 Canelo 10-8
    5 Canelo
    6 Canelo
    7 Canelo
    8 Canelo
    9 Munguia
    10 Canelo
    11 Canelo
    12 Canelo

    116-111 Canelo

That's how i had it i don't see any argument for Munguia winning this fight in all honesty, after the knockdown the skill level gap was apparent and Canelo landed all the eye catching clean hard shots, much better defence, and outboxed Munguia pretty clearly to me in a competitive fight. Munguia was aggressor but it was mostly ineffective aggression after he got knocked down.

I can see Munguia winning anywhere between 3 or 5 rounds 6 would be a stretch, but there's absolutely no way Munguia won 7 rounds in this fight absolutely no chance in hell.

Canelo clearly won the fight although Munguia was in the fight most of the way and kept it competitive. But to me it was quite apparent Canelo won a majority of the rounds with his superb defence and much cleaner harder punches.
