No he does not possess the tools to beat mayweather, he lost every round. He was a bigger stronger man who came in outweighing his opponent by 15 pounds or 2 weightclasses and he still got backed into a corner and beat silly. Thats not the trainer's fault. Do you know anything about boxing? Do you not realize you must be able to land on a guy to hurt him? Canelo could not land because floyd was too slick. This was predictable for anyone who watches lots of boxing. Power punchers lose to slick guys every time. Because the corner realized the obvious, he was outmatched and he wasn't going to win so they wanted him to survive. Cotto only hit mayweather because floyd allowed him to. Floyd CHOSE to trade with him to make the fight more interesting to fans. And cotto then was a better fighter.
All in all I think Canelo is still a very talented fighter and he will bounce back from this. I doubt he will ever have another shot against Floyd. He needs a new trainer to take advantage of the skills he has. In my opinion, he let a lot of people down last night.
No one seriously expcted him to win, why didn't he fight lara? Because he cannot beat slick fighters. Sorry it takes a swarming type fighter to beat a slick type guy, and since Floyd is amongst the most slick, it takes a top swarmer. Maybe a prime ODLH or a prime SrR but not anyone around today save for maybe pacman, gamboa or other slick guys like lara or rigo could beat him. And 3 of those guys have no fan base and he has no reason to fight and the other one, well we all know the story. There are just 4 fighters who COULD beat mayweather oday and he is not going to fight ANY of them.
You sir are an idiot. Just because someone possesses the tools doesn't necessarily mean they will beat someone. Plenty of fighters possess the tools to beat their opponent but don't take the appropriate actions to do so(Mike Tyson, Oliver McCall, etc.). Usually the reason for this is either poor training or wrong gameplan usually instructed by their trainer. The trainer is responsible for the fighters training regimen and gameplan on fight night. Here, the gameplan was terrible and Canelo's stamina was questionable (especially when he retreated to the ropes and let mayweather hit him with about 8-10 combinations in a row). I believe it would have been a different fight say if Canelo had been training with a quality trainer like Freddie Roach, Emanuel Steward, or Mayweather Sr. Are you seriously saying that his corner shoudlnt have instructed him to press Mayweather in the later rounds because he was so far behind? Canelo outweighed Mayweather by 15 pounds and always has a punchers chance (if he goes out there and actually throws some punches). No one seriously expected Canelo to win? This is the most ridiculous comment I think I've ever heard on ESB and I've been around since 2004. You're saying that 2 million people who bought ppv and 15,000 people who showed up on fight night didn't seriously think canelo could win? :-(
I actually didn't mind his gamplan that much...other than the fact that it felt a little scripted. His plan was obviously to make the body a priority, establish the jab early then feint the jab to set up the right hand later....while pacing himself for a 12 round fight(most important). If, instead of boxing with Floyd, he set his sights on bullrushing and mauling Mayweather...as many expected he would with a 15 lb weight advantage...he would have undoubtedly gassed out by the 6th or 7th round and probably gotten stopped(and embarrassed) late. My point here is that I believe that Canelo absolutely did the best that he could do...given his particular skill set and the scope of the task in front of him.
Someone who possess the tool will at least win 1 round. Hell you could say zab judah who probably came the closest to beating mayweahter (he dropped him) has the tools, but not a guy who lost every round. You can't blame the trainer, when the fighter goes in the ring he does what he wants or what feels natural, once he gets hit he forgets everything and fights off instincts. Top boxers like tyson and robinson make this clear. Boxers like Ali make it clear game plans do not work because if your opponent changes how he fights then your plan might not work anymore. Your trainer cannot fight for you. O so now its the trainer\s fault canelo backed into a corner and let floyd beat him up. I am sure that is what his trainer taught him, let floyd punch you 8-10 times in a row until his arms get tired then knock him out :rofl Manny is dead, Freddie has taken lots of criticism because pacman get knocked out and lost to bradley and Mayweather sr is great now? atsch O I guess because he made floyd win too right, LOL. Gimme a break. Boxers win the fights not trainers. A great trainer can make a fighter coverup better or stop him from making reckless mistakes but a trainer cannot change the essence of a fighter. No trainer is going to make amir khan take a punch and no trainer is going to make canelo beat floyd because canelo is an overt mismatch. Floyd doesn't fight guys who have a chance of ebating him except castillo and odlh and none where by choice really. He wanted the big money he had to take the tough fights. There are guys who could beat floyd like perhaps gamboa, lara, rigo or pacman but he will not fight any of them because he doesn't fight guys who can beat him. He'd fight klitschko before he'd fightany of those 4. Pressing floyd would not help because Canelo doesn't have the hand speed nor general endurance to swarm. And only swarmers can beat such a guy. The more Canelo pushed the more he got hurt and hit with hard counters. If I was thrust into his corner at the 8th round by an act of god, I'd tell him to try to time the punch, use that evasive movement like he used in the trout fight and make floyd miss and counter. There is no point in pressing a guy you cannot even land on who is counter punching all your rights. That is how you get knocked out then he'd really be far behind. Its like playing a baseball game where the pitcher is throwing pure curveballs and fast balls and telling your batter to swing more when he can't even see the curveballs and the fast balls wiz by him. And if you played baseball, a guy with a good curve ball you won't see it until it crosses the plate, it like a boogey ball that appears out of the sky. Its better you don't swing so much and focus on timing the pitch and tracking it because half the pitches are outside of the strike zone. Likewise, if a guy is too fast and too defensive and counters too much. You wait, time him and when he throws a punch you counter him. If he is faster than you, then turn up your dial and move faster and wait for the combos. And if you still canot hit him it is because you do not have the tools to hit him, you are just not good enough. That is what I saw. Zab Judah hit a younger faster floyd, he didn't win, but he had the tools, he won a good 4-5 rounds. Cotto in theory had some of the tools. Canelo lost every round imo he has none of the tools. He would have landed some lucky punches if he had the tools. The best thing he landed was an uppercut to the stomach as a counter to floyd's attack. What I saw was that when he got hit, he froze up. Maybe he is a late starter, maybe he was never hit before, but its not something guys get over usually ime, and I don't think he will. He can be a great boxer if he avoids slick fighters, but he won't ever beat the top slick guys, hence why he ducked lara. Lara deserves the title shot but no one will fight him. People are scared of the ecubans Anyone who thinks Canelo could have won was an idiot because Floyd routinely beats better power punchers. The only type of fighters who can beat stick and move type guys and swarmers or better movers. We saw 2 good swarmers give floyd close fights with odlh and castillo. Frankly Lara or Rigo or gamboa or pacman have far better chance of beating mayweather. Canelo had no chance and I said it long ago and you can look at my history.
Billy Graham: “It’s also glaringly obvious to anybody that the f***er’s got leverage, he understands the mechanics of what he does. It’ll actually get better as he gets even more out of himself. Without those tools, you can have a million trainers who can tell you how to beat Floyd and still not be able to do it. Golovkin can shift his weight, move into position for uppercuts and does it all effortlessly, so he’s obviously a natural, but he’s worked on it properly as well. Golovkin’s born to be a boxer, but he’s also textbook on things and does it all in a relaxed manner.”" In other words, Canelo would have lost with another trainer and another gameplan. He is decent but he can't learn what the nature didn't give him. You need to be born as a genius, get by some luck in the right environment, and keep motivation and love to what you do during your whole life (Mayweather on the top for 17 years already, right?).
His conditioning was fine against Trout. He doesn't need a new trainer or a conditioning coach. He just need to defend his title at 154, not 152, and he'll be fine.
Canelo adding pressure and increasing output would have just gotten him hit more. There's no way in hell he would have ever applied the kind of non-stop, in-your-face pressure Hatton did, and Canelo lacks the foot speed to offset Floyd's stance and positioning. Also, Hatton applied the most aggressive pressure to Floyd in quite some time, and was still getting tagged regularly. Canelo needs to work on the footwork and stamina.
dude, his game plan was to last the distance and not get gas...do you watch his previous fights?? he fights hard from round 1 and gets gas at 9th round....this fight his game plan was to ease the start and step on the gas the 2nd half...and if you didnt notice, he ease the first halfs as expected and tried to take mayweather the second, but mayweather is in great shape and did not let loose on the gas. imo, he needs to hire a good Strenght and condition coach.
