On Saturday Night, 73,126 fans witnessed Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders in Dallas. This SHATTERED the United States Indoor Boxing Attendance Record set by Muhammad Ali in his rematch vs Leon Spinks. Canelo's drawing power was on Full Display, and it was a special Night of Boxing. After a Year+ of No fans or limited crowds, the fans finally came back in full force and man it was incredible to see. That place was PACKED and ROWDY! The roar of the crowd has never sounded so good. It was a truly a celebration of boxing at its highest level. Sports just isn't the same without the fans, and we finally got what we have beem missing for over a year, and not only did we get a packed house, but we got something never seen before in Boxing in America - a record turnout surpassing anything we have ever seen in the Modern Era. Not only did the 73,000+ break the USA Indoor Record, but it also eclipsed Louis Schmeling 2 at Yankee Stadium from 1938. So this turned out to be the largest paid attendance for a boxing event in America since Tunney Dempsey 2 in 1927! That's nearly 95 years of Boxing History. What does this record attendance Mean for the Sport? What does it mean for Canelo's legacy and for boxing moving forward? Do you think we'll see more full stadiums like this moving forward? I don't think people really appreciate how massive this turnout was and how important this is for boxing. Is anyone else capable of drawing this many people in America? Or is Canelo just that popular? After seeing this spectacle, I don't think anyone can ever doubt the connection that Canelo has with his loyal Mexican fans. The support that Canelo has worldwide is something we have never seen before. The perception on internet forums obviously has no relation whatsoever to the real-life, in-stadium, butts-in-seats factor. Canelo has truly elevated Boxing to new heights and we should all be very grateful for what Canelo has done for the sport.
Great turnout by the Texicans. I thought it was a dreadful undercard without any decent up & coming American or Mexican talent so Canelo has pulled in most of those spectators on his own. Or perhaps with the help of a semi-decent opponent. Would like to see him do the third GGG fight having regard to how much the prospect of a competitive fight attracts fans. On face value, it's also a huge win for promoter Fast Eddie. I don't get why he would put a light-hitting Englishman versus a Frenchman who looked like he should have stayed in the amateurs as one of the feature attractions on the undercard though. I would have thought the world's best boxing promoter could come up with something better than that. That the Texicans supported it anyway was a great effort by them.
No doubt. When the fight was first announced my first impression was that only hardcore boxing fans would take an interest and was definitely surprised when I read they sold 70k tickets soon afterward.
I think the public’s hunger to go to a fight-ANY fight after the pandemic had something to do with it aswell. But no one will remember that.
Man canelos entrance gave me goosebumps.. The best fighter entrance ive ever seen! This content is protected
