They’re not always automatic rematch clauses, they’re contractual agreements that give the fighters another chance at the title, rather than joining the back of the line and getting back into contention. Imagine fighting for undisputed and then not having a rematch clause, you could never get another shot, and often the fighters are at the end of their careers when they are fighting for undisputed. Imagine being 30+ and losing all your belts and then having to wait inline for another shot. You would risk losing one of your belts for the chance to have another shot at all of the belts, and then you factor in the revenue that comes with an undisputed rematch brings. I see why the sanctioning bodies would strip a fighter of his belt for not facing his mandatory and I can understand why a fighter would risk being stripped for the chance to regain his belts. It all makes complete sense really.
How about if the alphabet boys rank the same boxers the same way? 4 belts and 40 different top ten boxers? That's crazy.
I disagree w lot of takes here. An undisputed champ is a rare feat and should be acknowledged as such. Sanctioning belts should require their mandatory contender to fight OTHER mandatory contenders in a playoff to see who gets to fight the undisputed champ. This would give fans more fights they wanna see AND allow undisputed fighters much needed flexibility. Wont ever happen but would be cool
Eh, Holmes lineal reign after Cooney was pretty ****. King fighters getting away with robberies and getting Lewis stripped of the WBA title for Ruiz and Holyfield to fight for it. Tyson dropping his belt rather than facing Lewis. Bowe throwing the WBC belt in the trash rather than facing Lewis. WBA stripping Duran for facing Hearns. McCallum getting stripped for facing Toney. Ali skipping mandatories without getting stripped.... There were plenty of **** in those decades.
I don’t remember which fight it was, but at some point, Floyd said screw your belt, im the product and don’t want to pay your fees. I remember at the time I took offense to that… In hindsight, I think he was right, especially being in the position he was in the sport at the time (no one was beating him or coming close…. But he was gonna lose his “championship” over fees?) All these sanctioning bodies ”print” new belts like money at this point for an excuse to profit off of them, and they mean less, and the fans are more confused. Too many sanctioning bodies, too much corruption and greed within them in many ways, and too many damn belts. One of the many reasons UFC is much more popular in the US…
Id be all for having contenders scrap it out however they want to , until they are named mandatory. Let's say the IBF mandatory, once named, has 6 months to fight the WBA mandatory, and contractually they have to do this, otherwise they will be removed from mandatory. The WBC and WBO mandatories fight each other at the same time, with the winners battling it out to be ultimate mandatory, so once named mandatory you have two fights, if you win both, you're next up for the champ. Hopefully this would lead to a higher level of mandatory challenger to weed out those anomalous fighters that seem to get the nod out of nowhere. Also hopefully leads to a situation where the champion can't duck the mandatory, and the mandatory can't be made to sit on the sidelines for ever and a day
Canelo has had a great career but forget the past, he has been making a mockery of the mandatory system for some time now Not a serious champion right now
