According to JCC himself Canelo has a good chance at beating him as the best Mexican fighter of all time.

Robert Garcia says he's already better than JCC.

Do you agree with these boxing legends?

It's a big statement. Chavez had an incredible work ethic and in his prime was very active, the sheer # of matches makes Chavez hard to top, but as a performer even the great Chavez can't deny the skills on display by Canelo.

Interesting post. I was wondering about this after the Smith fight.
Canelo's style now is similar to Chavez. A less volume and more defensively sound version.

Canelo has already broken some boxing records, including holding world titles at 154, 160, 168, and 175. I can't see another Mexican do that any time soon.

Yes the way he fights Canelo has definitely embraced the Mexican spirit reminiscent of Chavez but does so with more skill and sublime movement. Canelo doesn't subscribe to the take 1 to land 2 style that Chavez was sometimes criticized for. Canelo is much more elusive than Chavez was and a bigger puncher, though Chavez had an iron chin and his come forward in your face style dissuaded a lot of boxers from really loading up with big shots on him. Chavez was so dangerous as a puncher in many of his fights he would beat opponents down or out before they ever got an opportunity to land damaging shots on him.

Salvador Sanchez was 23 years old when he passed away. He already had wins over Danny Lopez, Ruben Castillo, Juan Laporte, Wilfredo Gomez and Azumah Nelson. I feel he is #1 but had he not passed there wouldn’t have even been a debate at the rate he was going.

That is where is gets tough - what defines greatness, the best versions of Salvador Sanchez could rival or even surprass the best versions of Canelo or Chavez. What Canelo and Chavez did over much longer careers has to rank them ahead of Sanchez, but you're right, who Sanchez was as a fighter and at the rate he was going if not for the unfortunate accident who knows how long he could have maintained that form.

Your crazy. He isn't even close. Lets see in JCs biggest bout at the time-Taylor he came back and stopped Taylor in the last round.
Canelo got spanked by Mayweather the ENTIRE fight.
Chavez beat: Rocky Lockridge,Roger Mayweather,Juan Laporte, Edwin Rosario,to name just a few. They were or would become champions.
Then you have Haughen,Camacho who had been champions.
Of course Taylor who was unbeaten in his PRIME.
    And Canelo beat who?

Hey man, take that argument to Julio Cesar Chavez and Robert Garcia, they said that. I'm just the messenger.

I'll take Chavez word over any hating clown on here, Canelo still has at least 5 more years so there is a huge chance.

Do you really need to see the counter to your argument when JCC himself has already made it?it appears this is just willlfully ignorant

I agree and made a thread about it last week. Canelo will be the GOAT of Mexican boxing.

I certainly believe he's well on his way.

JC was great and we loved to romanticize about his legacy, but when you stack them side by side Canelo is quickly gaining ground with just half the fights.

I will give JC credit for beating a few more guys "in their primes" but Canelo has more overall name recognition on his resume.

it's funny, because a lot of the same guys telling me that Canelo cant hold a candle to JC were also the same ones putting guys like Kovelav and Callum Smith up on these high pedestals whether they deserved to be there or not. now that Canelo has slain those dragons they try to downplay those victories.

I do think if he continues this trajectory and scoops up 2 or 3 more big wins, he will go down as best Mexican fighter ever.

and as it stands now I I already have Juanma Marquez rated over JC Chavez, his wins over Pac and Barrera are already as good or better than anything on JCs resume, and that's before you even start counting other quality wins like Juan Diaz and Joel Cassamayor, who were at least as good as Hector Camacho and Greg Haugen

Different time and different styles. You couldn’t keep JCC out the ring yet alone just down to 3 fights a year.

As far as collecting scalps in different divisions Big Red making history for any fighter north of 147lb
