Makabu's claim to fame was getting stopped by Bellew... and losing his pro debut by stoppage

 

Its a risk but a calculated one. He could have choosen Briedis who is not a much bigger cruiserweight then makabu and gotten way more respect if he beat him. Briedis is number 1 in the division.
Makabu is on the downhill for quite a while now and inactive,Shaky chin and leaky defence also. Canelo should have enough pop to get to him eventually. Canelo on the belt hunt throughout the divisions.Good for him

 

On the plus side, he'll shine the spotlight on a division that for ages has been seen as nothing more than a stepping stone on the way to heavyweight.

 

Ah, i guess i'm late to the party, but i'm just hearing now that the WBC, which is the belt that Junior Makabu has, is lowering cruiserweight from 200 to 190. Coincidence?

They are reducing the limit to 190! Making Makabu fight at a weight he has not on YEARS. He will be weight drained as usual for Canelos foes

 

It's a bit dubious, but Makabu will get paid for his troubles.

Also Canelo should have the upper hand, but this is still a much larger opponent than he has ever faced. It'll make it slightly interesting.
