1. Mosley- That cut had Canelo shook til the end. 2. Trout- Found out he struggles with boxers. 3. Golovkin- GGG one dimensional jab fest didn't work in this fight and both guy had to dig deep. 4. Amir Khan- Khan was boxing him up until the KO. 5. Josesito Lopez- He was a 140 fighter who went up 2 weight classes and got knocked down 3 times and kept coming back. Canelo was tired in that fight too.
1. GGG 2 2. Lara (underrated if somewhat debated win. Lara's solid career and longevity since then elevates this one) 3. Jacobs 4. Plant 5. Saunders (loved that he sent the tw*t into retirement, but also meant that Saunders had a pretty forgettable career that doesn't age the W very well. Kinda puts into perspective how underwhelming Canelo's later career has been. Really needed that Benavidez fight imo. Many greats had that 'big last win' later in their careers, but Canelo seems content to coast along instead.
When you look at them, you realise almost all the good wins have asterisks on them, so it's hard to pick. GGG 2, it's a disputed win not a clear one and it followed his PED suspension which delayed the rematch. Kovalev, concussion and drain clause. Jacobs, also had a drain clause. Smith, drain clause was attempted but rejected by Smith but he was messed around and not given proper notice and the Canelo power was suspect. Saunders, breaking his face with one punch is ridiculous, similar to the Smith fight in terms of strange power. I think Plant is the best win as he stood his ground and did not allow Canelo to drain or mess the preparation with short or unclear notice. Canelo was probably still PEDing big but the outcome looked within the realm of normality since he got the KO but didn't put a dent in a facial skeleton with one punch. Next we can put Smith where he also wasn't technically drained. Canelo was clearing PEDing to bully a giant SMW, but Smith didn't get KO'd. GGG 2 is not a clear win but Canelo did better than expected after the first fight. So he has three top wins where his corruption was less than the others.
Kovalev 175lb champ over the hill but still dangerous C Smith Ring 168lb champ Jacobs a top fighter at 160 lbs, only behind GGG and Canelo Plant 168lb titlist good fighter Saunders 168 lb titlist good fighter I didnt mention the 2nd GGG fight because i thought Canelo lost the first two. Didnt mention Trout or Lara because i thought Canelo lost them as well.
For someone with such a touted resume the listed best wins are pretty mediocre ain't they? Saunders? A decent fighter at best who was not even a legit 168 pounder and just a paper champion Callum Smith, needed a robbery to get past John Ryder. Mediocre fighter. Lara? He was 19-1-2 when Canelo beat him, and his only titles have been upgraded regular belt titles. Trout? Has never even been a legit WC.
1. James Kirkland. I was picking JK and he showed up to fight and Canelo stood his ground and knocked him out. That's the fight that made me a believer in Camelot 2. GG. People can say what they want today, but at the time all the know it alls were picking GG to steamroll Canelo, and nothing could have turned out further from the truth. A lot of similarities to Leonard v Hagler. 3. Daniel Jacobs. One of Canelos better opponents, and he had been on a bit of a roll at the time if I remember correctly. 4. Jamie Mungaya. This was a classic young lion vs old dog type fight. Not to mention SOME folks had been claiming Canelo has ducked Munguia for some time. The fight lived up to the hype, both men fought well, and Canelo was the clear winner 5. Krovalev. I know he was essentially done at that point, but Canelo jumping that far up in weight was a big question mark at the time. The KO was probably the most picturesque of his entire career, and that came despite being 'outboxed' for ten and a half rounds
