Canelo v Golovkin: Was it actually a robbery?

Nope, had it draw, I've watched it three time s and it's always the same score.

 

I agree with this but in the end Canelos stamina let him down and GGG was just able to outwork him and win by a round on my scorecard.

 

I think i gave the 6th as a 10-10. I could not split it at all and believe me i wanted to. I gave Canelo the first 2 and last 2 rounds

 

I am the hugest, most rabid Canelo fan there is. I have all the special merchandising, drink only Tecate and eat only Mexican beef. I even have custom-made Canelo underpants and Canelo toilet paper. I think Gennady "lil G" Golovkin is a fraud with no punching power and that Abel Sanchez is a glorified construction worker with a big mouth.

That said, Golovkin clearly won that fight by a long way and that the overwhelming majority of boxing fans who felt the same way were spot on.

Canelo landed only 2-3 more power punches than Golovkin and Golovkin's trip-hammer jab was carving up his defence all night long. I guess people forget that GGG snapped Canelo's head around with his shots and bullied him all over the ring. Canelo simply didn't have the footwork to escape and got trapped on the ropes over and over again. Yeah, he had a few sweet rallies, much like the fat kid on the playground may land a couple on the playground bully before he eats a dirt sandwich. That doesn't mean that the fight is "close". Fact is, one can argue rounds 1-3 and 10-12 to either fighter but when it comes to 4-9, its an exercise in elastic reasoning to award anything to Canelo.

I agree that Canelo was better than ever, but I object, as a die-hard Canelo fan, to the suggestion that he may have been on anything other than hard work, healthy Mexican beef and those pills Oscar gives him. It's not like he failed drug tests or anything.

I actually don't care anymore. If it happens, great, but I'd actually rather see Saunders or even Derevyanchenko who I think is bad news all the way.

 

Thats very true and i am bitter old man. But my gut feeling is had Golovkin won that more convincingly we would of still had that draw but you are totally right its just presumption. What i cant deny is that it was a reletively close fight. My score was 116-113 to Golovkin, first and last 2 rounds were for Canelo, the 6th i gave as a 10-10 drawn round and Golovkin had 3,4,5,7,8,9,10. Watched it a few times and always came up with exactly the same score.

 

Canelo done most of the real work in there whereas GGG just did a lot of acting by giving the illusion he was in control of the fight when in fact he really wasn't.
i.e. when he would giddyup towards Canelo , but then stop and fall back behind the safety of his jab once he entered into Canelo's range.

Its akin to somebody trying to attack a guy knowing his buddy is there to hold him back. He deserved an Oscar for best supporting actor.

At the end of the day , Golovkin threw the fight away by giving Canelo too much space to counter -n -move , and by not being more aggressive when he had the target in front of him.

Canelo gave up a good few rounds by conserving his energy and taking rounds off , so a draw isn't an outrageous result since neither guy did any better than the other. But in the rounds Canelo won , he looked the better boxer by landing the better variation of shots and by being the better ring general .

You got it about right. I had Canelo winning the 4th round as well, which nobody seems to be giving to Canelo. G did better in the 4th than he did in the first 3 rounds, which is why a lot of people just gave it to Golovkin so Golovkin wouldn't be down 4 rounds to 0, but you have to pay attention of how well Canelo boxed that round. He went to the ropes but fought off the ropes effectively and didn't get hit with anything while he was on the ropes. Aside from that, he did the better work, landed the better punches, outboxed Golovkin with excellent footwork and Golovkin couldn't land anything all that significant. Golovkin was closing the distance better in that round but what did he really land that was better than what Canelo landed that round? I'm not going to argue with anybody giving the 4th to Golovkin, but it wasn't a clear Golovkin round by any stretch of the imagination.

Canelo was winning the first half of the 5th too but I gave Golovkin that round due Golovkin finally catching Canelo on the ropes and how he started to press Canelo in the final minute.

Golovkin had his best stretch of the fight in the middle of the 7th round (about a 90 second stretch where he was doing some great work) but Golovkin nearly gave away the round in the final 30 seconds and Canelo did well in the first minute of the 7th. I still had Golovkin winning the 7th despite all that due to how well he did in the middle of the round.

The 8th and 9th were close as well, but I can see the argument that Golovkin barely edged those rounds with activity, however Canelo landed the best punches in those rounds. I have a difficult time giving Golovkin rounds 4, 5, 8 and 9. Giving Golovkin 3 of those 4 rounds seems about right, rather than all 4.

I think I've settled on giving Golovkin 5, 7, 8 and 9 (despite not being too sure that he won 8 and 9) since I gave Canelo the 4th, a round that admittedly could go either way, so I end up with Canelo winning about 8-4.

But yeah there's no doubt that Canelo did the better work and deserved to win, but Golovkin tried really hard and had a good poker face, and two judges gifted him a draw in a fight that he probably lost.

I never cried about the draw, I recognized it was close and could be argued either way. I knew in my heart Canelo won, but I knew with how close many of the rounds were Golovkin's fanbase would never admit that.

Good on you BoxingABC1 to take another look and recognize now who the true winner was. It was indeed Canelo. 8-4 or 7-5 depending on how you score rounds like 4, 8 and 9. (Round 5 most people are going to give Golovkin due to what happened in the final minute. Round 7 was Golovkin's best 90 second stretch so despite how that round started and ended, I think you gotta give that Round to Golovkin too) But rounds 4, 8 and 9, are pretty much toss ups.

Rounds 1,2,3,6,10,11,12 really aren't toss-ups lke rounds 4, 8 and 9. I mean 1, 6, and 10 were relatively close, but not as close as 4, 8 and 9 imho. I just can't wait for the rematch and I hope we're only 3 months away from it.

I thought it was a close fight and I was rooting for GGG to knock him out. But I know my view is in the minority, most think GGG won convincingly.
