Canelo v. Lara under 300K PPVs buys. Is that a flop.

Hearing numbers around 275K to 300K. The number of PPV events brings down buys. In addition, sometimes it is just bad timing. Media can only be spread so much. Cotto v. Martinez you had the Stanley Cup between New York and LA and the Belmont with a possible Triple Crown winner. Canelo had Mexico make a deep World Cup run along with other Latino outlets covering that event. All those could take buzz away from buying a boxing match that should have been a regular cable event anyway.

What the hell..., after the Angulo success I expected this to AT LEAST make $500k. Weren't "the fans" the ones to demand and cry for this fight? :huh

I agree about too many ppvs bringing down numbers, but disagree about things like the World Cup or a daytime horse race detracting from it. The numbers aren't horrible, the overall budget wasn't that high so getting 300k buys plus a sell out crowd should be enough for it to turn a decent profit. I think Floyd and manny have set unrealistic standards for ppv, early in oscars career he was doing around 300k, I think they're satisfied for now.

I don't think the World Cup had anything to do with it. I mean the World Cup final was on Sunday, this fight was on Saturday. If anything this fight was a perfect filler to tune in for as people waited for the World Cup final.

Kind of a bad number. It is equal to Floyd doing about 800k (due to Floyd's much larger paycheck) Not terrible but his PPV takehome will be a disappointment. Kid is 24 and headlining PPVs in a year with a record number of them.

canelo and lara's purse were only 2.5mil total, the rest of the undercards ~ 1.5mil = 4mil

    promotion and production cost ~3-4mil.

descent profit for gbp, i don't think canelo or lara got any upside with that number.

A vast majority of ppvs ordered are the HD versions, which was $60 for this ppv I believe. That means somewhere between about 15-18 million was brought in on just the ppvs and the promotion keeps half.

So 7.5 - 9 million was brought in for the promoter before the gate, sponsorship, tv rights, etc. I think the entire gauranteed purses was around 4 million.

There's a lot we don't know about the details of Alvarez's pay for the fight, promotion expenses, travel, etc but it looks like, due to the card being relatively cheap, that this card probably turned a profit.

It's simple, no one knows who the hell Erislandy Lara is. Yes, Boxing fans on forums knew him but the casual fans did not.

    Canelo-Cotto does over 1 million.

No. Nobody is paying to watch Lara

black fans = he's not black. I'm not paying.
Mexican fans = I love canelo, but Lara is a runner coward. I'm not paying.
White fans = Lara is a runner coward. I'm not paying.
Cuban fans = Are there that many cuban paying fans?
Puerto Rican fans = who cares...

Put canelo in there with cotto and that fight could do 600-800k

The terrible Angulo vs. Canelo fight left a bad taste in people's mouths and they weren't up for a second helping.

There was something real fishy about the way Angulo fought, people aren't stupid.
