...and yet that didn't happen when they finally agreed terms years later. what changed in the meantime? calzaghe dumped warren and went to the US. like i said in my previous post, you can't blame the bigger name fighter who is fighting on the biggest stage of all for not making a fight against someone who has no profile stateside. golovkin and felix sturm use to fight in the same stable in germany. how they are both perceived now is a direct result of the moves one of them made, and the moves one of them didn't.
I think Jones and Hopkins would have beaten Canelo as well. Also, Hopkins backed out of a proposed Calzaghe fight when they were younger because of a contract dispute. That has been documented on these boards many times.
Years later calzaghe had a bigger profile and then he stepped up to fight b hop..whereas before it was the other way round and Hopkins woulda stepped up to fight high risk n low reward fighter as you said...regardless it's a duck..and not one you can blame calzaghe for. My own personal mark against calzaghe is not fighting Jones years earlier
not in the US he didn't. you're blaming one of the best fighters of his era for not making a fight against a guy who had zero US profile.
Course he did ...when the fight was first offered was just after the Byron Mitchell fight... Are you saying calzaghe still had no us profile after beating lacy and unifying supermiddle Sounds more to me like your making excuses for Hopkins over a dislike for calzaghe over something that actually happened.
guys like hatton, khan and golovkin got their career-defining fights against genuinely great fighters (canelo, pacman, floyd) in their prime after crossing the pond. what is the best win of calzaghe, ottke and michaelewski combined against a fighter in their prime, and what do they have in common with each other, that the other three do not?
Calzaghes best win is Hopkins (the ring magazine rated number 1 at light heavy) But ....but.....but ....but Hopkins was old and soooo past his prime...as was calzaghe...and they were still the number ones in there division. If your gonna dig at him...do it for dodging the Jones fight in his prime ..not the Hopkins one..when it's clearly documented that he wanted the fight and Warren landed it for him
Well for starters the fighters you named lost too Canelo, Pac and Floyd whilst the others didn't lol.......
i agree that calzaghe's best win is hopkins, despite his age, as hopkins at 42-43 was still a better fighter than prime kessler imo, but you didn't answer my question. how many fights did calzaghe, ottke and michaelewski have combined? 140-ish? and who was the best opponent any of them ever beat who were in their prime? kessler? so why do fighters like pacman and floyd have 2 dozen kessler+ opponents on each of their resumes, yet 3 guys who fought about 140 fights and lost only 2 of them, could only muster a combined win against mikkel kessler as arguably their best win between them? and to top it off, calzaghe and ottke (who both retired 'undefeated' and fighting in the same division at the same time while both held at least one belt), couldn't even fight each other despite living an hour or two away from each other by plane. actions speak louder than words.
well that's what happens when you step up and fight the best. you've got people on here saying 'calzaghe was too fast, too slick..'. well sure, he was very good, but he was never very good against the best when it mattered because he never fought them.
I don't need to answer your question...the conversation is on calzaghe and canelo....you asked why calzaghe didn't test himself earlier...I provided the argument that he did try to ... Calzaghes career isn't hattons ,khan's or golovkins...I get what your getting at...that Joe Darius n Sven were stay at home champs....as were Hopkins and Jones. But America is the Mecca of boxing so they should've gone there earlier right? And I agree...but it doesn't change that he tried to make the fight...and Hopkins ducked...so it's a very valid criticism
Yeah true he never fought Eubank who afterwards went up and challenged for the world cruiser weight title in a war with Carl Thompson, or Kessler the unified 168 champ or Hopkins who stayed at the top for roughly another decade after..............
