Calzaghe might stop Canelo due to exhaustion late. Canelo has a tendency to gas. Imagine him trying to deal with Calzaghe's engine?
Even the dried twigs metacarpals Calzaghe schools the **** out of the Ginger Toad, the healthy handed one who in addition to his insane engine, iron chin, athleticism, blazing hand speed, foot speed, physical strength and skill also had legit power (unlike PED freak Clenelo, all of it natural btw) would stop him down the stretch. Clen would be blowing out of his ass by the halfway mark with the pace Joe set and we all know that and it would only get worse for him from thereon in and even his PEDs and his judges wouldn't be able to save him in this one. Hell, a shot still concussed Kovalev who has a six round gas tank and a cracked chin was outboxing his ass with pity pats and well on his way to victory on the vast majority of people's cards albeit he was also well on his way to being robbed by Clen's judges like so many of Clen's opponents have been. Clen has literally only legitimately beaten two world class fighters above Clenelo Weight: a close win over a clearly weight drained Jacobs who looked like the living dead on the scales (literally) and a KO of a cracked chin shot drunkard Kovalev who had a ton of legal woes hanging over his head and had come within a whisker of getting KTFO in his previous fight by a rank novice who had never even fought anyone remotely world class before, let alone actually beaten anyone who was. Clen even imposed a rehydration clause on Rocky From Stocky for goodness sake
I doubt it. Canelo knows how to pace himself. When he gases he lowers his output so he doesn't tire. When Canelo doesn't over exert himself with big punches he has no gassing problems. (see his match vs Chavez where he stood up in between rounds the entire match) Canelo only gasses when he loads up on big shots like he did vs GGG. He did that to get GGG to respect his power.
prime Calzaghe is a different animal than mid 30s Calzaghe. Prime Calzaghe vs current Canelo would be hard to predict. Prime Calzaghe had speed and threw a lot of punches. Which could be a problem for Canelo. But mid 30s Calzaghe who fought Hopkins or RJJ especially : Canelo would mop the floor with those late versions of Calzaghe.
You think Floyd in 2013 was at his best? I don’t see it that way. He looked much older and slower. Floyd’s speed and timing 5-6 years before were much better and his legs in 2013 weren’t even close to what they used to be. Floyd was still old, but Canelo’s style of waiting and hesitating is what made Floyd look as good as he did. Canelo had an opponent like Floyd with old legs, but didn’t take advantage and let Floyd keep the pace slow and for the most part in the middle of the ring, which was great for Floyd. I almost wanted to stop watching the fight at the time, since it looked was pretty much a sparring session for Floyd. This content is protected Maidana about a year later had Floyd moving all around the ring and you can see Floyd wasn’t able to be in cruise control like when he fought Canelo and actually showed some fatigue for once. Floyd was getting hit with a lot of shots he wouldn’t get touched by if he had been 5-6 years younger. Maidana unlike Canelo made the old man use his legs, but the only problem was Maidana himself started running out of steam in the midrounds, which is why he lost. This content is protected
I could see that for sure. Canelo does have heart though, and would never give up. Joe Cal is just too much for him.
You just compared prime Calzaghe to Chavez Jr. Besides, the version of GGG that Canelo fought couldn't even take out chinny Danny Jacobs.
We can agree that prime Calzaghe vs prime Canelo would be a hell of a battle. I think it would be unpredictable what would happen. Many scenarios could occur but I don't see a scenario where Calzaghe knocks Canelo out, it would take a miracle. Calzaghe's power at one time was decent but he also became known as Calslappy and a light puncher. Lets just say that out of all the possible fighters throughout history who might be capable of knocking Canelo out, Joe Calzaghe definitely isn't one of them. If it happened it would be something like : (these are just ballpark %s) 30% chance Canelo wins a decision (on landing less overall punches but more high quality punches) 40% chance Calzaghe wins a decision (due to his high level of activity and punch volume which most judges favor) 2% chance it is a 12 Round Draw 10% chance Canelo knocks Calzaghe down (flash knockdown) 5% chance Calzaghe knocks Canelo down (flash knockdown) 5% chance Canelo knocks Calzaghe down multiple times 2% chance Calzaghe knocks Canelo down multiple times 5% chance Canelo knocks Calzaghe out 1 % chance Calzaghe knocks Canelo out All the stars would need to align for Calzaghe to knock Canelo out. It is far more likely that Canelo would make Calzaghe pay for being over aggressive. Canelo would time Calzaghe and land shots when Calzaghe would throw too many punches. He could time Calzaghe in between his bursts of attacks in situations where Calzaghe isn't blocking since he's punching. Calzaghe's over aggressive tendency would be his downfall. When I say he could end up like Amir Khan I'm not joking. In that Calzaghe would try so hard to clearly win rounds he would leave himself open to big shots. You ask yourself could Calzaghe eat the uppercut that rocked GGG in the first match? It would be a great fight and a big test at LHW. I agree it would be a more difficult match than Kovalev. Kovalev was very cautious, Joe wouldn't be as cautious he would be throwing a lot as that's his style. Canelo would look for holes in those bursts to counter to the body and land big shots.
