Calzaghe was very underrated in my opinion and would give Canelo 12 rounds of what Khan gave him for five rounds. People are inherently more biased towards current sports people. Calzaghe was a tremendous boxer and a fighting man - just like a current Heavyweight from Morecambe.
Unless you stop Alvarez you aren't beating him, as Golovkin found out in the first fight and arguably in the second (I had it a draw). With decent and honest judging Calzaghe would take this, the Calzaghe that beat Kessler beats this jacked up version of Alvarez, outworks him and takes him to places, at that weight, that he's never experienced before. Can you imagine Alvarez sitting down after round ten knowing that at the very best he's down 6-4 on the cards and there's no dodgy judges to level things out for him? He'd have to come out all guns blazing with a tank that's emptying, playing into the hands of Calzaghe who would see out the round and go into the 12th knowing it's his.
Great fight and I rate both fighters highly. I think Joe could do it. Joe was lightning fast with a brilliant boxing brain. He could cause Canelo some big problems with his movement and hand speed. If you had to pick one super middle with the tools to beat Canelo, Joe is as good a pick as anyone. As I have stated many times, Joe was undefeated for a reason.
I watched Calzaghes Joe was an awesome fighter. He beat everyone put in front of him including Hopkins. You can’t argue with an undefeated record, unless all the opponents were trash. Wether it was Eubank, which I thought was a cracking win for Joe, Starie, Kessler, Thornberry, Bika, Hopkins, Woodhall or whoever else. Robin Reid was a handful for anyone in his prime so to stand and trade with Reid and come out with a win is testament to Joes ability and mental fortitude. He beat them all, with lightning fast hands and a brilliant boxing brain. Joe went into some of his fights not exactly fully motivated, read his autobiography, and still pulled wins out. It was a remarkable career that as a British fight fan, makes me proud. It will be a long time before we see another Joe.
There is no shame in getting dropped by the aforementioned. Joe got up and won. That makes the victories even more impressive imo.
Canelo has lost quite a few rounds against Saunders and Plant combined and neither are near Joe's class. Personally think Canelo is a bit overated, he is good but I don't see him beating the best of the SMW division gone by.
Jones was shot....calzaghe wasn't prime anymore. Hopkins was the number 1 at light heavyweight...does nobody remember this lol
I think Calzaghe would win a decision. It would be an SD but actually a UD. I think he'd get in a rhythm and take the zap off Canelo's punches whilst landing his own shots winning ''clear'' rounds against Canelo. Which most opponents he's faced fail to do. Saunders and Plant weren't winning ''clear'' rounds even in the 3 or 4 they won. Once Calzaghe is 5 rounds up Canelo would be starting to head hunt and throw shots to the body only for Calzaghe to land on the inside forcing him back. Canelo would be then trying to KO Calzaghe whilst the clock is going down without actually landing enough hard shots to change the momentum of the fight. Even the past prime Calzaghe had the superior leg movement, strength and the intelligence to know how to take the sting off Canelo's punches which a lot of the guys he's faced haven't figured out. Andre Ward in the 2nd Kovalev fight figured he could take the sting off Kovalev's shots up close whilst landing his own on the inside. Canelo seemed to have better stamina vs Plant because Plant's style exerts a lot of energy without him actually throwing any power shots. Calzaghe would be making him move around the ring and then throwing combos as he comes close. I think Calzaghe would run the clock down on Canelo and Canelo's slow feet and his habit of constantly resetting when his opponent moves would be even more apparent in a fight with Joe. He would look befuddled. Plant actually made Canelo look a fool a few times but the official highlights on youtube conveniently removed those moments. Canelo is ''elite'' and he fights constantly which is very commendable but i also think he has flaws in his movement which he hasn't improved since the Mayweather fight. It's just the way he moves and a top fighter could capitalize on those flaws. If he fought the ''faster'' prime Golovkin who moved much better he'd have been knocked out. Hopkins was a smarter boxer than Canelo. When Canelo gets older he won't have the intelligence to adapt once he slows down. When you compare Usyk who's fought everyone with no BS involved than you compare Canelo who has to have some advantage or have something stacked in his favor. Or he'll fight past it declined fighters or weak punchers who stylistically he'll look good against. The Hopkins who Calzaghe fought would beat Canelo and smother him on the inside making it an ugly fight.
Calzaghe pretty comfortably IMO. Canelo is amazing and looks unbeatable but come on BJS Callum Smith and Plant? There not exactly hall of fame type opponents I would say the 168 division is not that deep at present . Froch, Ward, Kessler I think would of been great fights with Canelo
