Totally agree. That first 5 rounds (lost the 6th) was absolutely brilliant. Some say he started to gas after round 6 but on all 3 judges scorecards he still won 3 of the last 6 rounds. He was never in trouble even when he took a huge shot, he didn’t buckle at all. The lad is brilliant.
Canelo will always have an asterisk beside his name because: - Questionable scorecards on his way to the top - Got outclassed by Floyd - Waited for GGG to get old - Got a robbery in his favour against the much loved GGG - Failed a PED test - Got a second favourable decision against GGG - Jumped to super middle to pointlessly grab a regular belt - Has ODLH as his promoter who is the snakiest most horrible man in boxing Canelo is obviously a fantastic fighter but something about his career has always irritated me. Never seems to be an even playing field when he's involved.
I agree and I really can't stand the little diva these days but I love watching him box. What's happened has happened and we all know a slightly faded GGG clearly beat him once. The Floyd fight was just at the wrong time for him imo. He has matured as a fighter but even now he wouldn't have beat Floyd. The lad is class though and good to watch.
Not sure he waited for GGG to get old @Hattonmad . He has climbed the weights as he’s got older and GGG was only his second real fight at middleweight whereas GGG was a career 160. I had the first fight 7-5 to GGG but the 2nd fight was fair enough imo. He adjusted in the second fight and went toe to toe with GGG whereas GGG just did the same thing and had no answer.
What a post - totally agree with all the points above but will give him credit for rattling Khan's head. Huge pong surrounding the Ginger One
He was purposely avoiding Middlewight, waiting for GGG to get old. The Liam Smith fight for example was a total waste of time and undoubtedly in my mind a calculated decision to delay his middleweight run. He'd nothing left to do at LM; why did he kill himself at the weight to take on a weak champion for a WBO strap? FWIW I blame ODLH on it moreso than Canelo. As soon as GGG looked faded against Jacobs they made the fight. They knew what they were doing. A fantastic boxer Canelo is, but I get uncomfortable when he's named among the greats for all the reasons I mentioned in an earlier post.
I reckon Canelo is the Mexican version of Ricky Hatton - very good World Champion, a very popular fighter but not quite elite. There is time for a couple of super fights to prove this.
Agree with Jurgen and the above. What annoys me the most is, talk about Canelo being this P4P great. You hear nothing about Golovkin now. Golovkin won both fights, theres an argument for the second fight it was a draw, only if you cant score fights though imo. Canelo was also gifted a win vs Lara. He's just beat Jacob's by a whisker, legitimately. By like a round. One of the most overrated boxers at the moment. It's amazing how people just seem to erase the GGG fights that Canelo actually lost and then place him up the P4P list.
I had him 8-4 against Jacobs. At the very most you could go 7-5. He never looked in trouble in that fight. Golovkin is another great fighter...he won the first fight but Canelo showed more variety in the second fight (46-6 in body punches) imo. I love GGG, but you have to also give credit to Canelo for standing toe to toe with Golovkin in the second fight. Golovkin couldn’t shift him and the only advice Sanchez could provide was to knock him out...and he couldn’t. I personally wouldn’t have had any complaints with a draw, 7-5 GGG or 7-5 Canelo. I would also place him further up the P4P ranking than GGG because he’s moved through 5 different weight classes throughout his career whereas GGG has stayed at 160. Just my opinion.
Would agree mate but going through more PED classes than weight classes really makes him boxthing's Lance Armstrong in my opinion. All I see now is a cheat and cheats should be banned for life.
It really does tarnish the sport doesn’t it. The punishments dished out in boxing strangely don’t match sports such as cycling, athletics, rugby etc. Until they do, it’s worth the risk because they’ll get away with a 6 month ban and that gap between fights is not uncommon.
I personally think a lot of the contentious scorecards that Canelo has had are more a case of him being a big favourite for the fight, the fight being close, and in those circumstances it often feels dubious when the home fighter gets the nod. I had him beating Lara and Jacobs in fairly close but clear enough fights. I thought he probably did enough to just nick the second Golovkin fight, and didn't think the draw in the first was as controversial as some. (Albeit clearly the card that had him miles in front was a joke.) That said, having watched it a few times, it still has the feel of a fight that Canelo lost. As has been said the drug test failings are the biggest source of contention when it comes to Alvarez. On a tangent from this, it seems fans are routinely prepared to look the other way if a fighter they admire or support gets busted. Lance Armstrong became an absolute pariah in the cycling world when he failed a test, yet in boxing, it seems if you like Canelo you are able to accept his tainted meat excuse and let him crack on. I find it strange that people who raise question marks about his whole career because of the drug test failings are prepared to swallow excuses from, for example, Tyson Fury, who's excuses are equally pathetic.
This is why I support lifetime bans. Give the next person a lifetime ban and see if anyone tries it again.
