Maybe goes a bit like hagler vs srl? This would be a banger I'd be skipping my wife birthday for! Hard to go against either guy tbh. I've never actually watched lalonde fight, so I'll watch it now and vote in an hour.
At 168, Canelo, without much trouble. SRL did nothing of note north of 160. Nor north of 154, if truth be told. At 154, I'd pick Leonard by UD.
After watching SRL v Lalonde, this match is actually even more interesting than I first thought. Both guys are smaller fighters moving up to 168. SRL has speed, style flexibility, punches in bunches and massive heart. Canelo has power, defensive responsibility a iron chin and high ring IQ. Both guys posses all these attributes, but this is how I see them compared to each other. I think Canelo applies pressure early trying to figure out SRL, SRL probably eases into the fight off the back foot, slipping in and out with short combos without commiting too much. In the mid rounds Canelo starts to time SRL, maybe knocks him down or hurts him. In the later rounds I think SRL makes adjustments and gets in on Canelo and smothers him. I love both these guys. But at 168 I see Canelo winning by very late Ko, or super close decision. I think SRL wins at any class lower than 168 by decision.
Canelo at 168lb is a "lesser" fighter than at 160 and below. Way less output, bad knees, limited movement, less punch variation and head hunts much more. I am not even sure if he is punching harder either in pure power terms; he just has better selection and sits down on punches more against slower and less mobile guys.
Canelo with his limited gas tank needs Aaron Pryor's juice and oxygen bottle to fight like Hagler, ahaha. And even Hagler was tired as **** in this fight.
Leonard vs Llalonde was a shell of his former self. And not a version I'd pick to beat Nelom tbh. Canelo is a peak or approaching his peak fighter. Canelo all day long. But Leonard who fought Kalule. That man beats Canelo all day long. From 154 to 168.
Agreed Leonard as he was vs Kalule would probably have the best chance against Canelo given the weight and that he was in his prime. He was great that night, but he was still getting hit by Kalule and the cards were close before the stoppage. That version of Leonard vs current Canelo at 168, still would have to favor Canelo. Though he could probably outpoint Canelo back when he was fighting at 154. Vs MW Canelo from 2017/2018 would have to favor Canelo but it would be close.
Make no mistake, he'd still get hit off Canelo, and lose rounds vs Canelo. But I would SRL to what he needed to get the victory. Haven't checked the measurements but from top of my head Leonard is taller and has a greater reach than Canelo, plus he carried his weight well.
I would just say there's a big difference between 154 Canelo and current 168 Canelo. I think multiple versions of Leonard, even when he fought at 147 would do well against 154-lb Canelo from many years ago. I mean, take the version of Leonard who fought Duran in the rematch, using his footwork, showboating, full of confidence. I would pick that Leonard even though it was at 147 to beat 154-lb Canelo. He was so elusive, so quick on his feet, he was on a whole different level that night, with all the showboating etc. Now I doubt he would do that much showboating vs Canelo and maybe canelo would make him pay if he did try and showboat him but just in terms of how he fought with the footwork and his ring generalship that night. The Leonard from Duran 2, would be hard for any 154-lb fighter to beat him. But the way he fought Kalule was also very effective but it was more in the pocket and he was still getting hit a little too much for me. Leonard from Duran 1, though standing toe to toe that long could be disaster vs any version of Canelo. And honestly even the older Leonard who fought Hagler, with all that rat-a-tat-tat and constant movement, lightning fast combinations, in and out, that would cause Canelo problems too. Though Canelo would probably catch him with a big shot and hurt him which Hagler didn't have the skill to do that night.
There is a big difference. He's now almost always the quicker man, and his timing is better than ever. But Leonard is one of the best fighters I've ever seen fight.
At 168 I don't think Canelo gasses as hard as he throws and moves less. Not saying Canelo and Hagler are the same, but I can see the fight being a slugfest war with different swing stages. I though SRL was able to adjust and take hagler the whole way. I know it's not a popular opinion but I did have SRL edging Hagler 115-113, as I though he did just enough at the right times. The reason I picked Canelo to win vs Lalonde version of SRL is that it took SRL 4-5 rounds to get going, and that will cost you against Canelo. Lalonde version of SRL <<< Hagler version of SRL
Leonard was past it in that fight, besides Canelo wins by decision regardless even if he gets knocked out
