Canelo vs Munguia Reportedly Does 500-550k PPV Buys

That's shockingly low, if accurate.

 

I don't trust a word Rick Glaser says, so I'd take this number with a metric ton of salt.

 

For a matchup like that its a good total in the year 2024. If you are expecting Canelo v generic opponent to do 7 figures you are living in the past. Canelo v Bivol did around the same. His lowest numbers were 300k when more people had cable.

 

Every Canelo fight seems to be a loss leader for whoever is promoting him

No wonder they don't put up much of a fight to resign him whenever their 2/3/4 fight deal contract expires.

I thought Al Haymon was smart. Guess not.

 

500,000 isn't bad in this era of extreme PPV oversaturation.

Bad is 110,000...................or 75,000. That's bad.

End of the day though, boxing is at a tipping point. They need to understand the PPV model simply isn't going to work very well going forward, they need to brainstorm something else.......................

 

Price point. I would pay $35-$45 consistently for PPV fights like Canelo/Mungia, Tank/Garcia. And up $75 For more meaningful fights like Bivol/Beterbiev or Crawford/Spence. But there is noway in hell I'm paying $90 to watch a fight that the outcome is pretty much known. I'll pass everytime. Canelo/Benivedas is worth the higher price point.

 

Cable has very likely entered its final decade. Live sports is keeping the thing afloat and live sports is eyeing up streaming.

What the UFC in MMA has done is outsource PPV to streaming. Where people need to have Disney+ just to be able to buy PPVs. Because eventually the cable company won't be around to be your middleman and I think at this point that is clear. Given boxings structure this really isn't an option and if it is I don't know how that would work logistically. I can't see every boxing promoter striking a deal with a seperate streamer going over well. I think your average person who buys a streaming service is only buying 1 or 2.

And your average younger person is sailing the seven seas.

It is bad PPV numbers when you factor in the purse amount. If it wasn’t for the reported 35 million guaranteed just to Canelo then this would have been great numbers

 

Well for one, it's a fight that has zero demand.

Two it's a fight that got in the way of a fight with all the demand.

Three the Saudis are producing mega cards, so these kind of fights don't garner any interest at all right now.

 

Marketing people figure this. Dropping 20 bucks probably would not increase the numbers that much.
