Terrible fight. I would've much rather seen him take on either Charlo brother or a rematch with Lara considering their first fight was a close one.

I was very impressed with his level of opposition since taking on Trout a few years back. But ever since he picked up the strap against Cotto, it seems him and his handlers aren't doing what they said they'd do- have him face the best fighters available. I find it hilarious that DLH keeps insulting Mayweather and says he's a cherrypicker when Oscar's protecting his fighter more than anyone I can think of right now in the sport. I get it, DLH is a businessman but he doesn't need to be such a pathological liar about his intentions with Alvarez' career. he wants to milk him against mid tier guys until he's essentially forced to fight someone who can beat him. Smith is a nobody who has an alphabet title. There's at least 5 JMW's that are much more worthy to fight Alvarez than some regional fighter who no one has ever heard of in the states.

Very disappointing. I wonder what his next matchup will be after this garbage fight.

Its not a mega fight by any means, but I don't feel there is any defending needed.

Its just a fight where Canelo can pick up a strap and considering Liam Smith is not with Haymon, this fight was probably the easiest one too make.

I'm not excited about it, but its a decent fight considering he is holding the WBO belt.

At the very worst its not worse than many of Tyson's fights including the Ettienne fight that sold for $50 13 year ago, or DLH's fight with Campas, and not any worse than several of Pacquiao's and Mayweather's fights in recent years. If anything its on par with Golovkin's fight against Lemiuex.

I can accept a fighter taking a year off so as long as he has earned it by fighting several top fighters before hand.

This is just another PPV fight on PPV weekend. Its all. NOthing to write home about. Hopefully the undercard is stalked like GBP likes to do.

 

I'm just mad because he could have literally chosen anyone else in the top 10 of 154 or 160 and it would have been a better fight imo.

 

He just barely beat the snot out of Cotto in Nov. 2015. Its not like he's fought a string of bums like other fighters you know who I'm talking about.

So he is using 2016 to fight British fighters. Looks like a strategic business move to capture the british and Euro audience. One year isn't going to kill anyone.

We currently have top P4P fighters fighting scrub after scrub for the past few years.

We can afford to give Canelo a break, really.
