Canelo wants September date, and he won't move for Mayweather

Even if they both got a PPV slot, Canelo would get the secondary slot. That would kill the earning potential of Canelo's fight. Canelo can try to fight on regular HBO if he wants, but his licensing fee would be a lot lower. Canelo will eventually back down if Mayweather fights in September.

There's no such thing as free HBO.

Less viewers > less fight sponsorship > less revenue > less money from redistribution across the World

It's bad business, and HBO are not in the business of bad business.

 

Unless Mayweather find another once in a lifetime rival to fight, then Canelo pretty much owns the date.
