It definitely depends on the fighter. Some fighters badly need the time for their body and mind to recuperate. Look at what Leonard did to Hagler after 3 years out of the ring. (Personally, I think Hagler won but Leonard got the decision.)

Fresh in the mind, inactivity is usually bad for boxers.
