There's an article on news 24 right now about Canelos Pay per views, after the Mayweather fight the only fights worth selling to the public was Cotto and Khan. Just shows that even Canelo fans aren't stupid enough to pay for Oscars careful matchmaking,as a GGG fan I want to see him against the best in his division and it looks like that's gonna finally happen with Jacobs being made mandatory,Canelo fans should be demanding the same but for some reason I never see any on here that complain about his awful match ups. Canelo needs to do what he did with Lara and demand that Oscar finds him some better fights as he's the real deal, has some power and has improved outta sight,I'm not a Canelo fan but I've always believed he's the biggest test outside of Jacobs for GGG?
Yep good post, like I said re Canelo bad publicity is good publicity, imagine both sets of fans if they find out next fall that we've been strung along all this time? I'm not saying that's how it is as the media don't seem to think so but it would be a master stroke from both camps if it were so?
May 2nd destroyed PPV in the Us it seems, those million PPV buys numbers are a distant memory. You can't really compare numbers before and after May 2
Ah OK. I'd not seen it anywhere else. Still. They're wrong and anyone with half a brain knows it. I like both guys, prefer Golovkin, but he's never gonna be some kind of Megastar.
Canelo may be the bigger draw but he's also the bigger Ducker.... 250K buys in his last fight would surely even out the draw now huh?
Watching the Brook-Golovkin as Micheal Buffer does the fighter announcements, the O2 crowd is obviously all pro-Brook, as the decibel level peaks as he is introduced. The noise level is drastically reduced during Golovkin's introduction and hardly many cheers are hear at all, relative to Brook. Golovkin ain't gots no draws.
That's an overly simplistic view of things. Just because most there were supporting Brook doesn't mean GGG didn't bring marquee value to the table. You think Brook could sell out the O2 without a name opponent like Golovkin? Brook has only fought once previously at the 02 arena and even then he had Joshua on the card, so he wasn't the draw even on that date. He usually fights at the Sheffield Arena which has a far smaller capacity. Golovkin in the US is definitely a smaller draw. But Golovkin now has options, he's been exposed to the UK market and casuals bought tickets for his fight against a Brit who isn't a big draw. If he can do that and make $4-5 million against Brook he can do the same against Eubank Jr and BJS. Golovkin has options now that the lucrative UK market has opened up for him.
We can improve on it but forwarding to the end of the fight where the fights winner is announced. Not many cheers can be heard as Golovkin stands smiling in the middle of the ring hands raised, in almost silence. You say that Brook is a Brit with no draw, but I think his draw is at least, 18,000. All the threads comparing Golovkin to Canelo draw are misdirected, and instead should be comparing, Golovkin versus Brook draw.
Once again cheering means nothing. Where were these 18,000 fans when Brook was fightin Bizier? Where were Sky with their PPV money then? Brook wasn't going to sell out the O2 or get PPV money without Golovkin. Golovkin can make the same money against Eubank and BJS and at the end of those fights the Brit's won't cheer Golovkin either but he won't care as long as they pay for the tickets and the PPV. How many paid PPV's to watch Mayweather lose, rather than win? You don't have to be a fan favourite to be a draw, Mayweather showed you could be a villain and do the same. Golovkin can easily play the villain against any Brit he faces for the British crowd and he'll cash in nicely by doing so.
Talk about simplistic. The boxing dynamics of the UK and the USA are totally different. So different that you cannot compare the two. Mayweather "villain" role is a natural in the US, given it's boxing history. $35M/fight is what the role pays. Mayweather, as example, was larger than any boxer in the world. Had he fought in the UK, attendance would have eclipsed that of any UK born fighter. Hatton-Mayweather in the UK? How many in the UK would turn out to see Canelo-Eubank?
I think a lot of Fan's of both Golovkin and Canelo fail to realise it would be in His best interest's if Canelo had a couple of Fights at Middleweight....but what happens for example if Canelo Fights Lemieux and David TKO's him...would the fight against Golovkin lose some appeal....probably for a financial reason they come to an agreement and get the fight sealed....I think Lemieux has a solid chance against Alvarez....
