I wonder why Canelo is advertised as a brutal puncher by some of the fans. Surely, he can hit and isn't feather-fisted by any means, but he isn't a top puncher either. He has some highlight reel KOs, but he scored them against boxers with pcertified glass jaws - Amir Khan and James Kirkland. Khan was KTFOed by a lightweight journeyman in 50 seconds, Kirkland was demolished by extremely feather-fisted Ishida in one round. Canelo couldn't even slightly hurt past-prime and undersider Miguel Cotto and undersized Shane Mosley who was beyond shot. Small Manny Pacquiao stopped MUCH better version of Cotto and knocked down better version of Mosley. Canelo couldn't even drop Matthew Hatton, who was knocked down hard by light hitting (and small) Ukrainian welterweight Yuri Nuzhnenko in the first round. And I think Kell Brook's punches had more impact on GGG than Canelo's ones. I think Canelo's power is solied but far from special, very far. He isn't on the same level as Miguel Cotto, Erik Morales or Juan Manuel Marquez in terms of punching power in P4P sense.
Don't forget 140 pounder, Lovemove N'Dou who was shopworn and past it, went the full distance with Canelo at 154 as well.
Kell Brook's punches had more effect on Matthew Hatton than Canelo's did as well. Canelo's power is vastly overrated, I've covered this endlessly on here.... but it always bears repeating.
Going into Alvarez GGG 1, I also thought if Jose Cotto had in serious trouble, what would a MW KO machine would do to him? He’s a cheat and I hate to admit it, but he has improved massively since the pre-Mayweather
Not only that but he was often the bigger guy,his power ought to be better at Middleweight. His record is really not that of a PFP star though, most go twelve rounds and despite what the cards say,are often close.
I also thought that as well . I didn't think he had devastating power. But I think his power is showing more that he's in a bigger weight class and not as drained . I didn't think he could stop Rocky that early but he did . So I am starting to pay attention to his power more. I doubt he'll stop Jacobs but if does stop Jacobs I'll be surprised
It's solid but nothing to right home about. Recall, he hit Angulo with everything and the kitchen sink, and the Angulo was eating it with little issue. The ref stopped the fight because it was one side, not because Angulo was all that hurt.
Never seen many fans claim he's a devastating puncher. Is this topic even thread worthy? Slow day on the Canelo hate train I see. Lol This thread is on the same level as "Lomachenko was ducking Alberto Machado, apparently!" Thread.
Rofl, the first hand canelo put on angulo, destroyed angulo's liver and conditioned the whole fight. Angulo got a hell of a beating. I dont know what fight you saw, tbh. He never was the same again, btw. Really you guys are going to bash canelo because of his power? hahahahahaha He has good power. Oh man! oh man! canelo only has good power! only!!! only good!! omg omg ou em gi....
I saw numerous head shots land, and Angulo went no where. That you say he softened Angulo's body up, makes the power look even worse. It's above average, but nothing to write home about. Lovemore N'Dou was an ancient 140 pounder when Canelo fought him at 154. N'Dou is tough, but a guy who can crack, dropped him twice, before breaking his hand on his head. You'd expect Canelo to be able to drop him, probably stop him being that N'Dou was fighting Canelo at 154, and not his native 140 pounds.
His power shouldn’t be rated or slated imo, but he throws mean body shots when the target is there. I know this thread will probably be slated, that’s abit unfair to the op. He doesn’t want an answer he wants a debate? Canelo was probably the fighter who I was most excited by watching him rise/step up in opposition... the drug cheating killed that, it’s undisputatable that he cheated, let’s be honnest. What I saw in him as a fighter, was a talent who once he stepped into the ring he was home. A fighter who’s took something form every fight, developing in front of our eyes, taking fights a step above a lot of the time, Floyd for example. Then he got caught, we all know boxing is rife for cheating and corruption, I can’t forgive a drug cheat, a tarnished career for what, I’ll never understand. But forget all that the time when he got popped the climate was right for someone to blow the lid off cheating in the sport, the Russian state sponsored doping ban was still on fresh. I don’t know why I just feel like at that moment in that time, he had the popularity/fan base he could of changed things with how he handled that, he could of manned up came clean spoke on the needto clean up the sport, I can’t think of a fighter that had a better moment a better platform than canelo. He wouldn’t of faced much worse punishment, but he would of left a legacy that boxing hasn’t seen yet, one we need to see. F me first rant in awhile but I mean that sheet.
Hhhmmm maybe, I don’t know, I think there’s another better comparison, it’s rare that either looks for their real power shots until it’s needed, both can be sucked into a battle(id normally say war, but talent dosent go to war talent goes into battle lol). Not because of lack of power or stamina, but those two look like they love to be in that ring love the exchange. I get the feeling if you asked either of them their prefered way to min both would pick 12rnd ko, imo
Canelo's power has enough pop to: -make Lara fight more defensively than in any other fight. -make Cotto not commit to his punches for the first time in his career -make Angulo look like completely useless -reduced GGG into a jabber and made him neglect a body attack in the first fight -made GGG retreat and fight off the back foot for the first time in his career That is respectable power at the very least.
