Why is it that many of the complaints about Canelo are through the prism of how his fans are perceived to view Canelo? I don't see where Canelo's power is being blown out of proportion by his own fans. I don't see how he's really being advertised as a brutal puncher. With Canelo it's really his punching technique that stands out more than his power. It's one thing to talk about the ability to land a devastating blow by just sheer force and strength vs pinpointing shots. You can produce a knockdown with less power if you surprise the opponent with the punch or pinpoint the shot. When you are talking pure punching strengths nobody's comparing him to Prime George Foreman but it's the technique on his punches that product the results and can have devastating effect if timed right.

When you're talking about who had more power "in a P4P sense" between Canelo Cotto Morales and JMM, well you would be adjusting that rating to the smaller guys to make them more comparable to Canelo. As far as Cotto, when you are talking Prime Cotto he was a more dangerous and powerful fighter than he was later in his career when he fought Mayweather or Canelo. Post loaded gloves Cotto did not have the same fire or fight he did in his prime. He did still put in some good performances but didn't have the same power. That is a difficult comparison between those fighters due to the weight disparity and how you will be compensating for that when comparing them. When it comes to punching technique how do you disprove that Canelo is more powerful than those fighters? What are your reasons. I'd rate Morales at an extremely high level when it comes to punching technique, when it comes to footwork I would have to give Morales an edge over Canelo. Comparing these fighters in a P4P sense you have to look at pure power and adjust it, if the disparity is not great then you have to look at punching technique. You have to have the skills to transfer that power and get the glove to the target.

    All valid points.

I think it's similar to Mayweather. He lands his shots with precision and they land flush. That stops people in their tracks and garners respect. It all makes the judges take notice every time.

He also has the slashing walloping punches that you can hear as they really "pop" on impact. Again, this catches the judges. I think it mentally effects opponents as well because they know these blows are scoring and putting them behind in the round.

The body is different thing altogether....Clenelo is a savage body puncher.

His power must have improved with the PEDs though, and it depends when he was using, or what he was using, so it's hard to judge against old fights. Around the time of the Liam Smith fight he did suddenly seem more destructive though. Smith is a big 154, durable, and got dropped twice with single shots there. Wouldn't surprise me if he hired his gourmet steak chef around this point.

Yet GGG, who is claimed to be a warrior with an granite chin, clearly felt and respected his power.

I'd even go as far to say that in both of those fights he looked like the power puncher out of the two.

I agree with this. Canelo is certainly a solid puncher but it is when and how he lands them that makes them devastating. I see him a lot like Povetkin in this regard - punch placement trumps raw power. Guys that have a leaky defence and middling conditioning like fielding are going to get destroyed by Canelo.

Let's just say that certain 'enhancements' have been made to Canelo and his physiology.

When you have $300m behind you through juggernaut promoters like Golden Boy, DAZN and TV networks, they make sure their investment WILL pay off.
