Finally got a non controversial win over an old Golovkin and even then, still convincingly lost the last chunk of the fight. Beat Ryder, who went on to get dropped a few times and stopped by Munguia in a pretty one sided beating from what I recall, less than a year later. Beat Munguia, who went on to get stopped by Surace who only had 4 KOs in 20+ fights coming in, once again less than a year later. Beat Berlanga, who went on to get dropped multiple times and stopped by Sheeraz, someone making his debut at the weight, once again within a year of Canelo fighting him. To Canelo's credit, he dropped the last three of the above early on, but yeah I'd say his Undisputed 168 run is firmly in cottage cheese territory at this point.
Crawford barely beat Madrimov 2 weight classes below 168, when he knocks Crawford out nobody will give him props, they'll say he bullied a 38 year old welterweight. I can already see it a mile off.
I think him unifying the belts was a solid achievement, but what he's done since then in dragging up MWs and ducking Benavidez has been pretty pathetic.
Clenelo couldn't get a Mung out of there who was one punch iced out by a complete featherfist with a hideous KO 19% and only 5 stoppage wins in 29 fights Couldn't get a Scull out of there who was coming off a scandalous robbery win against Shishkin who unlike Clenelo not only hurt Scull but hurt him a few times, including having him on wobbly legs and falling into the ropes in big trouble from a jab in round 12 and Scull looking like he wasn't going to make it to the final bell in that round Couldn't get an inactive Jermello out of there who weighs about the same as Crawford at 154, had come up 2 weight classes, hadn't fought in 16 months, and should've been 1-1 vs Castano in his last 2 fights Couldn't get a 40 y/o shell of GGG out of there who looked soft at the higher weight Couldn't get a Juan Ryder out of there who was seriously compromised by a broken nose from round 2 of the fight which bled throughout profusely and who was bounced up and down off the canvas x 4 by Mung in his very next fight and stopped in 9 And now this. Clenelo couldn't even get the glass-jawed hype job Berlangy out of there who MW Sheeraz knocked out in sensational fashion in Berlangy's backyard the first time he actually tried to do so and let his hands go in combination with intent All of these fighters he couldn't get out of there in the last 4 years sans Bivol were cherrypicks and or padded record cherrypick hype jobs. He's been shamelessly ducking Benavidez and the rematch with Bivol for years and has been picking those cherries like crazy The only guy he has managed to get out of there in 4 years is Plant and even then it took him 11 rounds to do so despite Plant clearly being chinny and getting hurt multiple times, dropped, and nearly stopped early by club fighter in McCumby and then losing his next fight clearly to guy who had been stopped at MW 2 fights before and who hurt Plant numerous times too Is Clenelo even an elite fighter at this stage because all these far from elites fighters he shares common opponents with are outdoing him vs all said common opponents and often doing what he could not and getting them out of there?
Of course he won't get props. Like you said he really struggled against Madrimov 2 classes below. Based on your own post you shouldn't give him props neither.
Thing is with Canelo hes not even a big MW let alone a SMW.. people dumping on him with triangle theories aren't factoring that in.. Sheeraz is prime, 6'3 & probably walks around at 190lbs+.. Canelo is 5'8, more of a natural MW & past his peak.. & I'd still pick Canelo to spank Sheeraz .. never rated Berlanga either, he's pretty useless.. so who cares how the win ages, SMW is a wasteland right now we all know that but Canelo gets the job done .. whereas Sheeraz has already looked flaky against Adames.. i suspect hes packing glass
Canelo goes about 5 years between challenges. Floyd, GGG, Bivol. All losses. B or C fighters in between.
In terms of Canelo not getting these guys out of there I think you have to take the context into account. Canelo is so comfortable he fights at his own pace without even getting out of first gear while guys who end of getting the knockout like Sheeraz yesterday enter the fight with more intensity as they aren’t looking at their opponent from a view of being so superior. Canelo just breezes like he owns the ring so unless you are good enough to test him he won’t go through the gears.
