Even against a guy who was right there to be hit all fight long, Canelo STILL couldn't fight an entire fight. His stamina is still sh1tty as fuck and he looked winded in there for most of the fight. The idea that he would somehow be competitive with Golovkin is laughable. Golovkin would fucking crush him. I'm not even sure Canelo would beat Cotto because Cotto's stamina is so much better and I don't even think Canelo is a better boxer than Cotto. But, yeah, JCC still sucks and so does Canelo. His power is so overrated too. It's a little like Jermain Taylor, where he puts so much effort into each punch (which probably causes a lot of his stamina problems), that it looks more devastating than it really is. Meanwhile, a lot of smaller dudes went the distance with him, and most of his stoppages are mercy stoppages, not on groggy fighters, just dudes that have taken a prolonged beating, that they could/would continue to take. Canelo is not a huge puncher, despite his reputation. Last several fights: Perro: Not even close to hurt. Good chin, though, so maybe that's deceiving. Mayweather: Not touched. Inconclusive. Trout: Hurt once. Goes the distance. Hurt worse by Lara in his next fight. Lopez: Hurt often. Also, a 140 pounder. Shane: Completely shot, never bothered. Little Manny hurt him worse, back when Manny stopped hurting people. Cintron: Mercy stoppage. Cintron fine in the corner, but happy it's over. Alfonso Gomez: One of the worse stoppages of all time. Ryan Rhodes: 12th round "mercy" stoppage. Not hurt. Rhodes pissed off about it. Matthew Hatton: Welterweight goes 12. Lovemore Ndou: Light welterweight goes 12. Baldomir: One punch knockout, where Canelo's mythical power was born.
Yea wild style, he fought Alfredo Angulo, not Ray Leonard .people high on him ATM. I agree his stamina still isn't the best but it seemed better vs Angulo. I think his stamina is why he fought like he did vs Floyd.
I have agreed with this premise for quite a while. Canelo does have stamina issues related to his training methods, and his punching power is overrated.
I notice everyone staying far, far away from this thread. Salient, accurate, fact-filled points stand on their own.
Canelo is not overwhelmingly powerful, but strong enough to catch his opponents attention. He is only 23 and his performance against Angulo was impressive. Bring on Kirkland.
Canelo has a strange punching technique. He almost slings his punches. But he is a very talented fighter. I would like to see him against Lara.
I'd say he hits as hard as Cotto (or at least a natural Jr. Middleweight equivalent) but his speed and counter punching ability is what makes his power seem so great... Nothing wrong with not being able to KO somebody with one shot
Nope. I see things for what they are. Angulo was right there to be hit all night long and Canelo couldn't sustain anything. It was kind of pathetic to tell you the truth. He would land a combination, and then have to take time off. Couldn't really sustain any kind of attack.
His stamina is pretty bad and that's his most glaring weakness His power is very good, no GGG or Mathysse level good but still he KO'd the unkoable Baldomir kept iron chinned guys like Mosley and Angulo honest. Lara is supposedly a big puncher, yet he couldn't keep Perro off him, Canelo made him gun shy. He made Trout do the bambi dance with one punch. He send Floyd reeling from one side of the ring to the other with a punch that landed on Floyd's shoulder he failed to stop N'dou and Hatton, two guys who have never been stopped, big deal his power is fine, his combinations are excelent what really, really sucks about him is his stamina and his slow as hell footspeed. He has very fast hands but his footwork looks like it belongs to a 40yo dude. That's why he had no chance of catching Floyd
Canelo does seem to get winded after the 5-6 rounds. Against Mayweather, this is when he started backing against the ropes and letting Mayweather pot shot him. Also, around this time is when his punches begin to lose their speed and power. Against Angulo he winded around mid fight and I thought he had punched himself out. If Angulo wasn't an average low B level fighter and had been endurance and some defensive skills, he could have capitalized on Canelo's stamina problem. You can bet that a fighter like Lara will.
