I think the record should only count if it is from an undiputed champ. Just like I think Hopkins mid rec. is bogus. Monzon is the REAL record holder.:rasta
Its a different era of boxing now. ......I just dont give the same weight to title defenses that I did in the past........just too many belts to go around and the best not fighting the best...... ......it happened with Canizalez as well. The best bantamweights were'nt fighting eachother, but just defending against mandatories. Its an accomplishment no doubt, but not the big deal title defenses once were, when it was one World Champion per weight class. How many world title belts are there now per division 4 or 5?atsch
Its not bogus, but it certainly does'nt hold the same weight that it did when it was one champ per division. The more champions there are per division, the more diluted the weight of holding a world title becomes. From my memory however, not that his era of middleweights was strong, but Hopkins fought all comers at middleweight. Though green, Hopkins did lose to the best middleweight he ever faced in Roy Jones Jr., so that it something to hold against him when ranking him.
Point taken, but I was just posing the question as to whether people thought Hozumi had it in him to make 17 title defenses. Canizales didn't fight Vasquez or Jones at Bantamweight when they were all in their prime but he did beat something like 12-13 number 1 contenders during his title reign. I think his run has a lot of credibility.
Not only does it have credibility, but imo Canizalez was the best Bantamweight of his era......I think he beats both Jones and Vasquez at Bantamweight. Canizales eventually faced both of them when he was a few years past prime, and lost by close split decisions to both of them.
Did you see Sahaprom is still fighting? He came before Hasegawa and had 14 consecutive title defenses. He retired I guess in 08 but came right back this year and has had five fights against nobodies just this year.
Maybe number 1 ranked by a title organization but I believe he only fought one or two Ring Magazine top 10 ranked fighters during his reign.
Manuel Ortiz defended the bantamweight title 15 times in a row and an additional 4 times after regaining his title.
