Samil Sam lost to a 100 year old McCall??? Ouch! And Juan Carlos Gomes doesn't KO a chinny Bakhtov? uuh.
Gomez isn't so surprising, he's almost always seemed the kind of guy that's been happy to lazily box his way to a decision. He's got a lot of talent, but sometimes that's made him quite casual with it. It's not the kind of result that's going to wake up the division, even though he'd probably be a worthy contender. McCall on the other hand...yeah, credit to both him and the judges for not being swayed by a home crowd or Suliaman's pretty damn heavy hints about how he wanted SSS to win. It was a McCall performance that has been repeated several times in his past...slow start, soak up his opponent's shots, and use his superior chin and stamina to rally from behind to pick up the win. Samil Sam has no-one else to blame but his 253lb self.
About the only downside for Olly is that it's likely to be a year at best before he gets that title shot...there are two WBC title fight that need to take place first. McCall had said he'd give SSS a rematch. He has to keep his hand in in the meantime I guess, I just hope that doesn't blow up in his face like it did for Toney...
Samil Sinan Sam has never impressed me. I'm not surprised at all that he lost to McCall. McCall's obviously on a mission to wipe out the enduring memory of him as the crack head who cried like a baby. I'd like to see McCall-Holyfield. Two old guys in great shape. Ironically these two 40+ fighters are among the very best the USA has to offer at heavyweight at the moment.
Samil Sinan Sam has always been a scrub and is lucky to have gone as far as he has in his carrer.Gomez should have already won a heavyweight belt by now but doesn't take his carrer seriously.
Sam has never been more than a fringe contender - and a mediocre one at that. At best, he's a decent regional contender, nothing more.
