his feet were very very quick. I think Olivares had avergae hand speed at most times but he was capable of upping the gears and landing some shots very quickly especially his double left hook to the body, that was a very quick punch.
Olivares put on quite a boxing show in that third Castillo match...he was fast afoot as well as with his hands. It was a most untypical fight for him as he had to turn boxer to beat the tough hard hitting Castillo who, interestingly enough, scored the only knockdowns in their trilogy. As for Canto being contemptuous of Camacho's style, Miguel's own style was very similar, as he was rather unMexican in being a fast, mobile counterpunching ring artist. I think Canto may have been scoffing at Camacho's gaudy ring attire and outrageous personality rather than Hector's fighting style.
I think your right there. I read an article discussing the great mexicans and the writer spoke to several mexicans including Marco Anotnio Barrera and they all refused to rate Miguel Canto in a top 10 Mexican fighter list as they regarded him as unmexican as he was not a warrior and didnt fight.
GP, I have always been a fan of Canto...but he has always been neither fish nor fowl with his Mexican people..they just don't go for that kind of style, which Sal Sanchez too is guilty to an extent of having. Camacho just seems a bit "effeminate" at times with the trunks he wore in the ring, and all the dancing and gyrating he always did..it's just so "unMexican"...only the bizarre Jorge Paez comes close to being the Mexican equivalent of Hector.
Camacho HAD to have proven himself a "man" by the way he sucked up that beating from Chavez..even to the most hostile Mexican.
I also believe Camacho got a political decision over Roberto Duran in 1996 on PPV....... Camacho started out fast and was ahead after 4 rds, but Duran came alive and began to hammer Camacho's ass in the middle rds........... By rds 11 and 12, Camacho was back-peddling and looking to go the distance........... Duran successfully closed the gap mid-way in the bout and finished while on the attack............. Camacho got a gift from the shyster judges so a proposed match with SRL could unfold in 1997.......... Totally politically corrupt to the maxi-pad........ MR.BILL
I like Canto aswell he had quite a pleasant style to watch that was smooth and rolling. But i was surprised Mexicans didnt rate him as i dont care who you are you have to appreciate the skill of Canto. Camacho is Puerto Rican and that is the most un mexican thing you can do
Boring maybe but not embarassing. hector's only weakness was lack of killer instinct that allowed many to last the distance. He could have stopped him early if he wished but he allowed him to hear the final bell. And no, Boza was NOT smaller. Boza is an ex jr lightweight champ that moved up as did Hector and both were now competing at 135. Hector being defending champ
Alot of the old school fans from Mexico feel the same way about Camacho, i remeber hearing all the Paisas(Mexican Nationals) having a laugh at Camacho.
Camacho has nothing to be ashamed about..he showed his chin and guts vs Chavez and was a clever boxer..albeit a bit on the safety-first side, and his ring attire was a bit over the top IMO, and he was a bit of a screwball, but hey, he could just as well tell those Mexicans, even the great ones, as well as everyone else to go screw themselves..as Willie Pep once said, "the fans don't pay your doctor bills"..
