Rocky Marciano was one of the most grueling opponents of all time. Very few opponents were able to regain there form after a fight against him. Archie Moore was on a almost 50 fight win streak and had beaten the best heavy and light heavy's, he was an exception because he went on to a 38-4-2 record after Rocky but most say he was never the same after the Marciano fight. Marciano ruined Vingo, Charles,Walcott and Rex Layne as well as Cockel and Matthews What other fighter was known as a destroyer who ruined careers. Roberto Duran he destroyed Esteban Dejesus, Ray Lampkin, Davey Moore, Pipino Cuevas, What other fighter were hard to fight without leaving a piece of yourself in the ring.
After Marciano, a real argument could be made for leaving second place blank. The Hit Man can be mentioned in connection with Cuevas, Hagler and maybe Benitez. (Bummy, I don't really chalk up the demise of Pipino to Duran, and most of the press at the time felt that Tommy took Jose's chin away in Detroit.) However, within the opposing context, I think Arguello might be acknowledged as the anti-Marciano, somebody who many opponents became better for having competed against. Ditto for Holmes. Many future champions among the ranks of challengers they defeated.
Jose Luis Castillo tooa certain extent: Corrales was terribly depleted by their two fights, as was Stevie Johnston who was on a mad streak at the time. Ditto for Cesar Bazan, who never seriously contended again, and Castillo seemed to take away Julio Diaz' chin as well.
JCC, prime Trinidad, and to an extent a prime Cotto. A beating from them would change your career for the worst if not end it.
im a fan of julio diaz an to be fair juan valenzuela is the one who exposed his chin,an to be honest do you think castillo himself was the same after his corrales fights
Jimmy Young. Finished Muhammad Ali off IMO he could never compete at the same level ever again. Same with Foreman. He ruined two ATGs. And a very good fighter in Ken Norton. Nightmares :scaredas:
Hopkins and Trinidad are the most recent examples of ''wreckers''. Both have ruined their fair share. Juan Manuel Marquez is doing a bit himself, I think he ended Juan Diaz as a top line fighter..... we'll have to wait and see what becomes of Katsidis.
Yeah, he completely ruined that Joe Louis guy. Really though, I haven't really seen the aftermath of people he fought. Who did he ruin?
Steve Hamas. Went from being a 28 year old no1 ranked contender to retired overnight. It is noteworthy that a lot of his opponents were at their absolute pinacle in terms of ranking when he fought them, and declined rather quickly after that.
Trinidad was the best one in recent memory. He wrecked a bunch of the guys he fought. Not just Vargas and Reid.
Janitor is right. Hamas had a good future and Schmeling nearly killed him. his career was over after that.
