Most people who voted froch probs aint seen collins fight

 

Tony Thornton (in one of the best displays of ring generalship you'll see, every millimetre covered from side to side movement from Collins), Chris Pyatt, Eubank twice, Benn twice, and arguably Reggie and Kalambay.

Thornton was a much better fighter than Arthur Abraham or Glen Johnson. The talent pool back then was 20x wider. He did about as well against DeWitt as Hearns did, better against Sosa than Toney did, better against Toney than anyone other than Sosa himself, master McCallum, southpaw Reggie and peak Roy Jones, and arguably beat Eubank in Glasgow.

A weight-drained Collins outboxed and overwhelmed Pyatt more impressively than a young John David Jackson.

Collins was so well-schooled by the Marvin Hagler camp, the Barney Eastwood camp, Floyd Patterson, wise old Freddie King, Freddie Roach... He took shots from Eubank and Benn that would've caused Carl's shoulder blades to bounce off the canvas.

Eubank wasn't over the hill in the first fight he was 28 years old and still fresh. Collins won the fight on work rate and by out hustling Eubank. Collins was lucky not to be KO'd late on as Eubank backed off when it looked like he could have got a knock out. Overall though Collins was a clear winner.

 

I think Froch's biggest problem with Collins would be the pace Collins would set. He'd be all over Froch throwing bag loads of punches, he had a serious engine. If Froch was forced onto the back foot throwing pot shots with his leaky defense it could be a long night for him. On the other hand if the Froch that showed up for Bute turned up Collins would have the fight of his life on his hands.

It's a pick em fight with not a huge amount of skill on display.

Benn was coming off a loss, and retired after the 2nd Collins fight.

Eubank lost 3 of his next 5 fights after the 2nd Collins fight.

Froch despite all his shortcomings technically, is one tough *******, and awkward and heavy handed enough to give anybody trouble. Benn and Eubank were both reluctant to take punches in order to land there own. For all Benns talk about liking a "tear up" he was useless at avoiding punches and setting up counters.

I'm a fan of the Celtic Warrior, but he's getting way overrated here.

A fight between him and Froch would have been a battle of attrition, Collins wouldn't have simply outboxed Froch, and he was never heavy handed enough discourage or hurt Froch.

A lot of people say Collins was robbed in the Reggie Johnson fight and the Kalambay fight was close, but the McCallum night was just to early in Collin's career for him.
As you said all of these guys including Eubank were defensive masters who were better than Dirrell and Ward and Froch lost to both IMO. I mean People forget Froch lost to Kessler, so what makes them think Froch would beat a better schooled teak tough fighter in Steve Collins?

Benn retired after the Malinga fight, again after the first Collins fight and yet again after the second Steve fight. He never looked better physically than against Collins, he was bobbing and weaving in there like a prime Joe Frazier in those fights and the leverages he was getting into counter power shots were unbelievable. Mentally, he was all over the place.

Eubank boxed better than ever in the Thompson fights, and in Dubai he looked as good as ever.

Benn useless at avoiding punches? Eubank in their second fight, McClellan and Collins couldn't time their right hands due to Benn's body and head movement.

 

Collins fought better fighters, obviously. McCallum and Kalambay were better than Hopkins ever was. He fought a completely different style against Eubank (II) and beyond, from cagey counter-puncher to wild marauding brawler who attacked from angles and never stopped punching, responding immediately when hit etc.

The cagey younger Collins would out-speed Froch in the middle of the ring and win a decision. The world-beating winging warrior would be outworked by Froch in the middle of the ring, and walk onto a few big long uppercuts but battle through and lose valiantly over the distance.
