Anyone remember what an exciting and underated fighter former WBO cruiser champ Carl Thompson was? Now retired, but just to mention a few of his bouts where he had 2 great wars with Eubank, had a several knockdowns each way battle with Ezra Sellers before losing, trailing on points to Sebastian Rothman before producing a massive 1 punch finish and was being hammered by D. Haye for 3 rounds before coming back to floor and stop him. What an exciting warrior he was. With Ademek & Haye having moved up in weight, how do you think Thompson would manage against the current crop of cruisers today? I think he would have a good chance of being the top man. What you think?
no offence dude but this has been done a bit But yeah he was one man rocky movie he was either on the verge of being stopped or KOing guys You have to wonder if Haye had seen any of his fights , David hurt him and thought " hes ready to go " not realising Thompson could survive on the edge of a KO for 12 rounds ! Tough tough tough Mother****er
Sorry still new and had not seen a thread on Thompson before. I was at the Thompson vs Haye bout in London, I was in total shock at the result
A warrior. Exciting and had a helluva heart. He could be hurt and stunned with one good punch, but he was damn hurt to put down & keep down. That said, he wouldn't do anything today. He's retired for a reason.
No shot of being the top man I'm afraid. The likes of Flores and Cunningham would easily outbox him, and perhaps TKO him in the later rounds. Marco Huck would walk through him. He would probably beat Erdei for for the WBC belt though, and may end up at the bottom of the top 10 rankings. Thompson was a tough warrior for sure though, I vividly remember his war with Akim Tafer, the French amateur HW champ. What a scrap that was! Despite this, the Cruiserweight division today, despite lacking superstars (other than Adamek, if he remains), is certainly quite deep with contenders, and Thompson would find it very hard to climb into the top 10, let alone the top 5.
I see what your saying but Cunningham was put down 3 times by Ademek, who Thompson hits harder than, Huck was stopped by Cunningham who hits nowhere near as hard. Flores I think has yet to really prove himself, so I couldnt really guess at this time
not to give haye any credit or come to his defense, but this carl thompson guy is way underrated. one of the toughest sob's in his day
Saw Carl Thompson in Tesco's about 2 weeks ago, in Horwich, Bolton. Said hello and what a very nice man he is. You wouldnt believe that he was/is a former world champion....very humble. Plus he is one of Britains most exciting fighters of all time, always going to war.
